Famous Blunders (a thread for Sadists only!)

Howdy Folks!

I'm currently reading "Bobby Fischer Goes to War", and, sadistically, I've enjoyed the fact that Game 1 of Spassky v Fischer saw Bobby pretty much giftwrap the result for Boris with his 29th move 29...bxh2. For those not familiar with the game, the board looked like this after Fischer's move:

(A note for newbies, this move has pretty much given the Black Bishop to White, as White can play pawn to G3 trapping the bishop into the corner. Thus making it incredibly hard for the bishop to get out unscathed.)

When I continued to read, I found that Fischer strung out the game for another 16 moves hoping for a draw, but could not induce once and lost. This one move, however, did make me feel a little better about the idiotic things I do when I play - I mean, if a GM in a World Championship match can make a rookie mistake then maybe I shouldn't be so hard on myself!?!

Anyway, the big question I have is: what other famous blunders have sewn a little joy in your heart upon reading?

(To bring me sensibly back down to earth I think I should play the "Fischer" AI on Chessmaster XI, I bet I don't even make it to move 5 Cry)

Cheers!

What about Kramnik's "blunder of the century" against Deep Fritz? I can't remember the position exactly, but he had the game practically won, and he missed a mate-in-one.

Great examples all (especially "The worst move ever" Tonydal!!!).

I've just read a bit more of my book and it seems that Spassky also made a huge blunder - in Game 5 - involving his queen which lead to Fischer winning that encounter.

It seems quite reassuring that it's not just me that suffers from "Chess Blindness"!!!

Most of the time, I get mated right as i am like 1 move away from mating my opponent. I get so caught up in mating that I forget i'm in threat of mate.

Yup, this is common for me too. You move a piece forgetting that it's doing a defensive job and then booo-ya, you're checkmated...

Joel Benjamin missing the mate in one from Boris Gulko was pretty ugly, especially because he had already seen it - then forgot about it.  Sadly, Benjamin was never really thesame after that loss.

Kinda odd to see this thread after soooo long.

I love your post Helipacter, I'm gonna use the game in my group The Blunderers forum to show people that top GM's can still balls up!

You should NEVER be hard on yourself. In the first place, (because i know this is the only thing most aspiring masters care about...) it's bad for your chess. When your hard on yourself, you get emotionally involved in the game, when you get emotionally involved in the game, you make mistakes. When you play and study the only thing you should be concerned with is the game; relax, and let go of everything else...aspirations, hopes, fears, passions...lose yourself in a realm of pure logic...

When you do that entirely and completely, you have mastered the game.

Haha, just thought of a more logical way to explain why blunders don't matter. A blunder is simply a monumental logical error, that's all. They are brought on by short mental lapse...these mental lapses are caused by distraction...or mental dammage...mental dammage brought on by aging is why a great players performance declines over the years...like when a boxer get's to old to fight. I assume for most of us on this thread that isn't a problem...yet. So, we can fairly assume that it isn't mental dammage...it must be distraction. What are we distracted by? Anything that isn't chess...so the logical way to avoid blunders is to empty your mind of anything that isn't chess...!!!WHILE YOUR PLAYING!!!<----just to clarify...or when your studying. Because when you start emptying your mind of everything but chess when your not playing or studying chess you go (idk if swears are appropriate here, prob not) F****ING CRAZY. Like good old Bobby Fischer :)
