FIDE rated games UK (not SE)

I'd like to play in a FIDE rated game.  I've had a look around the internet but most of what I can see are games around London.  Does anyone know a site where I could find FIDE rated games around the South Manchester area?

If you contact the English Chess Federation englishchess.org.uk they will be able to give you links and contacts to Manchester area clubs and rated tournaments, which should be a good start. If you are aiming to play such tournaments I presume you have experience of long games, but if you would like to play 90 30 or another such control on here to prepare, let me know. I had an ecf rating of 151 before I stopped otb and on most chess sites my rating tends towards ~2000 if that helps [ratings here are quite different and I have found no real long game competition]

Thanks.  I found a club 20 minutes drive away.  Will the club play rated games or are rated games only played in tournaments?  Will I ever play FIDE rated games in the UK are will all the games be ECF?  I thought FIDE was the international governing body so was expecting all games to be FIDE rated.

The longest game I've played is 15-10.  I'd be up for playing a 30 minute game or 90 minute game with you on here sometime thanks.

Any club will have its own internal club competitions and be affiliated to regional leagues so you'll be able to get ECF rated games that way once they get an idea of your strength. Based on your ratings on here you should pop out between 130 and 160 so you may also be asked to play for Greater Manchester in county matches, I'll get an idea where you are when we play 90+30. You can also play individual rated games if people agree.

In order to get FIDE rated games, you'd need to be an ECF Gold Member which costs £34 and runs a year from 1 September to 31 August. That probably isn't worth it, there are few FIDE rated tournaments generally in the UK save for Opens at major congresses that you would travel to as weekend events or such as British Chess Championships weeks in July which moves around and in 2018 will take place near you in Hull, or the 4NCL national team league but if you're in the Manchester area it's unlikely you'd get a spot in one of those teams on a regular enough basis. Most clubs have an arrangement where club membership fees are paid into ECF memberships, and you will usually be asked to pay once you play more than a handful of games for a club in a season. And if you plan to only play club and county [no external tournaments say in Leeds] you'd only need Bronze membership, but your club can walk you through that.

Most domestic players have no need of a FIDE rating unless they plan to travel abroad to play in events - players who play FIDE rated events here have their ECF ratings converted to an estimate which accommodates foreign entrants such as the Major Open - the current approximation is FIDE = 7.5xECF+700. FIDE is like the EU, it has so much stuff to deal with globally that it leaves the actual governing and rating of domestic players to the national federations, but if you ended up for example wanting to play a tournament abroad on holiday, you would end up needing Gold ECF, because FIDE insist on everyone having a registration and pass the cost downwards as with any administrative thing.

Beyond that you could use FIDE Arena online and pay for membership but I don't know whether the ratings are valid in the real world, and the last time I tried it, that site had an appalling design, and for example, would actually show a pop up if you didn't move for a certain amount of time insisting you show yourself to still be there by moving your mouse, or be forfeited...

PM me and let me know when you'd like a game, I'm free any time!

Therte are no "FIDE rated Chess Clubs", but FIDE rated Chess tournaments.

All of these tournaments get an entry at chess results dot com.
