Yup. That's my prediction. Yup.

Shush! Magnus may be reading these forums. Now he's gonna play the Caro-Kann.

Hey chess.com

Disappointing you couldn’t catch the beginning of the first game or the first few moves with the board up whilst commentators blathered on about opening predictions.

The game started perfectly on time and you missed it! Dropped the ball, you lost me to another channel. Very unprofessional…

I've been trying to watch the WCC and I keep thinking to myself: is it even possible to invent a worse spectator sport than slow chess? Two dudes sitting at a table for 4-6 hours  staring at a board. Add to this, 99% of people who even know the game can't understand what's going on without having someone explain it to them and people who don't play the game have a zero chance of knowing what's going on. Meanwhile, the commentators, not knowing how to fill the time, end up talking about how wonderful the breakfast buffet was. The nail in the coffin? Most games aren't even decisive. This is pretty horrible theater.

It's probably an acquired taste, but I actually quite enjoy it. It is playing in the background, while I am doing other stuff. When things get exciting, I start paying attention. I like it better than watching speed chess tournaments, where things are happening all the time so you need to constantly watch or miss stuff.

And if you make me watch a game of cricket or something, I would also have no slightest idea of what is going on (not that I understand even half of what is going on now, that's why we have those commentators happy.png)

Well, the fact is that people are watching it, otherwise there would not be any coverage.

Well, historically speaking the world championship wasn't exactly invented to please the average 1200 rated chess.com crowd who get nervous when they have to focus longer than 10 minutes on something, but to determine who is the strongest chess player in the world.

There are plenty of alternatives: Pog Champs, streamers who scream and/or dance while playing blitz, hand and brain bullet matches... you name it.

There is no obligation to watch the world championship. Not everyone who enjoys facebook posts has to read novels...
