Has anyone put both games into an engine to see how they did ?

No, that's never happened.

You cant do it on here it seems, I just tried

Well, you can, and in any case I was being extremely sarcastic.

Just a big LOL. I didn't even know that this championship is started, but now I can swear that all the games will be finished by a draw.

Boring.

Orthodox chess is dead, folks.

Here's game 1 at depth 22

Can someone please explain to me why these games are a draw? Neither game has stalemate or threefold repetition

First one was threefold. Second one might as well have been.

Almost all GM games end like this (without a checkmate or completely forced repetition). At that level they know when the game is over, and they'll agree to stop playing... either someone resigns or they agree to draw.

Both games ended in repetition - a Black Rook move.

Second game ended in a draw by agreement

Here's the second game

Hi,

Would somebody please tell me if there is a way to watch Dubai 2021 FIDE World Championship directly from the hall, without any commentary overlay? For Candidates 2021, chess.com's Twitch account has had Command Center enabled which includes different cameras but FIDE 2021 Dubai does not have that feature.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm interested in the raw camera recordings (with audio).

Another draw coming. Third in a row.

World Championship matches are usually full of draws. It's kind of expected, when two top-level players square off.

For me, the main point of interest is the variety of openings and middle-game strategies. So far we've had 2 Ruys and 1 Catalan. I'm hoping Carlsen chooses something different in game 4.

In the 1927 WCC (Capablanca - Alekhine), by comparison, 32 of the 34 games were the Queen's Gambit Declined ...  surprise.png

Carlsen knows he will beat the crap out of Nepo in tie breaks lol . So he is just playing safe 🤣

*sighs* todays game was pretty dry, at least game 1 and 2 were interesting. Although this is expected in a wcc match

Honestly, the most fascinating thing about the matches so far (for me) has been listening to Caruana talk about the positions.

The guy's depth of knowledge is incredible. It's like a free master-class, each game.

True story: I woke up early to watch the game. I watched and fell asleep after an hour with my iPad on my lap. There was nothing particularly interesting about that game and looked like any of a zillion other draws. If only Nepo had played g4… but it seems he’s playing more “maturely” these days. This isn’t the Nepo everyone expected.

@wits-end - those journalists are there because they want something quotable and they want to write a story. They have the power to put a positive spin on the events, or could write something boring and dry. The players should be mindful of that.

When Magnus says something like he doesn't even remotely care, he might make a few chess fans giggle, but he's probably upsetting the journalists, the sponsors, and he may even be offending the hosts. That's just not very smart.

What he should say is something like, "I really think that everyone is doing a great job and I'm so glad to see so much interest in chess. It would be difficult of me to pick a favorite because everyone has shown such a high degree of professionalism. We're counting on everyone who helps bring chess to our fans, and I'd like to thank all of you."

Was that hard? No. Was it truthful? Who cares. It makes those who cover chess happy, it makes the sponsors happy, and it makes the hosts happy. What's wrong with that?

Obviously, there is nothing wrong with what you’ve proposed. You’re first statement holds the key, “the journalist are there because they want something quotable…” Magnus obliged and gave them exactly that. Secondly your following comment “and they want to write a story” is a bit more interesting. If journalists were still just that, journaling for the sake of reporting a given event I might agree with you on this point. However, it has been my experience that reporters and journalists already have “the story” and hope to gain a few tidbits or sound bites to flesh it out. They hope it gives them the edge over all the others, i.e. ratings, readers, etc.

Magnus or Nepo for that a matter simple handing out platitudes is just more of the typical play-it-safe-and-don’t-bite-the-hand-that-feeds-you nonsense. Honest and maybe even snarky responses will garner more interest in the event than three draws will. I’m not saying that games (even though drawn) will not be of major interest to the core fans and adherents to classical chess, that is obvious. In depth analysis and canned responses to ridiculous interview questions might be palatable to the ardent, but those who may be “testing the waters” so-to-speak by tuning in to the WCC will find Magnus’s off-the-cuff reply refreshing.

Bah. I'm not buying any of it. Magnus is the world champion. He should take his role as the face of chess that the world sees very seriously. In these press conferences he comes off as bored, annoyed, smug, aloof, and frankly kind of a jerk. It wouldn't take much for him to make some kind of effort.

Where can one read about the game itself?

Edit:  I mean, game 3, following the moves.

That's just Magnus' personality. He's cocky and dismissive, and he would be the first to agree.

I agree that it's not exactly a "professional" demeanor, but at this point, it's kind of who he is ...

Well, the same could be said for many events. While we will not agree, I respect your opinion. I see him as the current champion, not the face of chess. I simply prefer the honest and unrehearsed replies. On to game four!

Nepo is far better in tactics than carlsen, who is with me

@wits-end - it's nice that you prefer that you prefer that Magnus be "honest." It doesn't deny the fact that it's not good for chess, has to upset the sponsors, probably doesn't ingratiate himself to his hosts, and doesn't put chess in a good light. He should make half an effort just for the sake of the game.

I'm sure that many of their Arab hosts are very offended. It's *super* important that when you are the guest of an Arab that you show that you are warm, welcoming, and thankful to be there. It's expected that you compliment people, compliment their "home," and take notice of the effort people have taken. As I said, this stuff isn't hard. It's not hard to smile. It's not hard to thank people. It's not hard to say nice things. His behavior is frankly, kind of embarrassing.
