Fishing Pole Trap - tried once, 100% success rate!

I just read about the "fishing pole trap" and thought I'd try it out at some point. My very next game, the opponent obligingly opened with a ruy lopez and then castled. I thought, too good to be true, but let's give it a go. Result - he fell straight into it. Victory in 9 moves!

Not something for serious games, but I can see this being amusing every once in a while. evil.png

Tricks like this will score you some wins against low-rated unprepared players, but if you're wanting to improve, you'll do better if you make moves that will improve your position even assuming your opponent plays the best possible move in the position.

If your opponent had played  5. h4, your knight looks rather silly running back where he came from.  Then white can chop the c6 knight with his bishop and kill the now-unprotected e5 pawn with his knight.  So 4..Ng4 actually blunders a pawn, if your opponent had been more alert.

Thanks Mcgleason. You are absolutely correct that it's not a good line if the trap doesn't play out. I did mention this. The point is that it's a fun trick for non-serious games and the only time I've ever tried it, it worked.
