Fix The Connection Issues

Maybe investing just some of the cash from the ads in server capacity would help. Instead of taking it home or spending it on "achievements" and such.

What cash from ads? You all have ad blockers installed.

/ No click. No cash.

/ Why do you think they are spending most of their time and effort supporting things like the Twitch streamers, where you can't block the ads?

@notmtwain it appears the only reason for your presence here is to smack down anyone who dares to suggest that there are problems. If you don't have a solution, why not simply let it rest and let someone else have a crack at an answer?

notmtwain is actually one of the more helpful people here.

well, unfortunately that's not my experience.

I always thought it was me and my crappy internet!! Played on Lichess for a couple hours for the first time. My rating is up 250 point because I dont lose on time half the games!!! You get a fair "shake". What a difference! I just wanted to agree with the author of this post. Fix your servers!!

anonymousaccount

Rating there are pretty inflated. I played there for a little while it was silly how much higher my rating was compared to real over the board rating.

cctucker

Fair enough. I really don't care about my rating as much as getting an accurate reflection of time used in blitz games

If you do a trace from your client to chess.com you'll notice a number of connections/hops your traffic goes through. Any one of those, or multiple ones, can introduce lag and/or disconnections. The site can't really do anything about that.

The site also can't control what other software is on your system, what processes are using network traffic that might cause problems, other traffic on your local network, or how the combination of those things can impact connectivity.

What they can do is make the clients and live server process as robust as they can. They can be more forgiving of network lag also, but at some point, there is only so much that can be allowed without impacting your opponent (i.e. one side utilizes much more time than the other, and a game lasts a lot longer than it should.)

For the latter things, they don't need to pour 100% of their resources into fixing them, or making them more robust, especially since many programmers work on other site aspects and too many programmers working on a single project can be counter-productive.

While all of that is true to a point @Martin_Stahl... more could be done to explain or help troubleshoot specific differences in performance between different interfaces on the same network. eg I run chess.com via a browser on my laptop, and via the android App on my samsung S5.

Same connection via WiFi, then Fibre. Two vastly different experiences. 1-0 on the laptop is perfect. 3-0 on the App is almost unplayable due to time loss. I won't even bother with 1-0 on the App... you'll get 5 moves in and run out of time.

Its simply not right to lump all of these experiences into "your connection is the problem - read these docs and go away" Same difference between browser and App on the phone. browser works. App runs out of time. These scenarios remain unexplained

If you are playing on the app and both the cellular data and wifi are up, then it is possible your device might be signal hopping. The processes running on your device can also interfere.

Anecdotally,  I have seen more issues on the forums with iOS than Android but I think a lot of issues still can be device related.  Can't say that the client has some issues on some combinations of devices or carrier, or even on wifi only devices, but the times I have played on my phone, I haven't noticed major problem. Of course, I don't play a ton of Live and certainly don't play much bullet grin.png

As to the articles, there really isn't a lot that can be suggested from a mobile standpoint. Other than minimize background processes and maybe only have one data connection active when playing.

@Martin_Stahl, thank you for responding in a more professional and civilised manner than some of the other admins here (undercover or not).
Along with @PrettySirius, also feel that feedback is not being taken seriously by this site. Or is being handled by same IT responsible for the issue.
Being accused of digging up old threads (while #44 and #46 were obviously quite recent) was a bit harsh.

More professional and civilized? Who called who a Nazi?

Harsh? Is it not a year old thread? Are there 10,000 complaints per day? Is it harsh to respond when you guys start making up things like that?

You guys expect a lot for your $0 contributions.

You finally got around to specifying that it is bullet on one of the apps that is the problem.  I doubt that lag issues will be solved until the site starts running servers all over the world, like the popular video games do. However, bullet lag doesn't bother me because I rarely play anything faster than 10 0.

Why not join the app group to test and give feedback on new releases? Why not give feedback via the app store reviews ( which the developers seem to pay attention to)

Yes, they could explain more but if they assigned people to respond in the forums, those people would never get anything else done.

They do publish a development update blog and the site's CEO has given interviews.

Connection used to be fine for me. No change at my end, but now I lose time every turn through dodgy connection. Doesn’t matter if I’m at home, on the bus or at work. Suggests strongly that the issue is with chess.com

I’m a paying member so would hope to have an answer and a fix.

Thanks
Anyara

I just lost a game because of "connection issues". I was winning and had 1 minute left on the clock while my opponent had 20 seconds. The countdown reached 14... and then it said it would auto-disconnect in 1 minute for me. The notice disappeared and a few seconds later the countdown for him reset to 22 and finally began ticking down again until it reached 0, after which it stayed there for some more time until I got a popup saying I lost.

Yet during my downtime I was able to load another website perfectly fine. Why did this happen? I was winning too!

Well a moderator commented on this post already which means the wannabe mod notmtwain is yet again wrong saying they don’t view the forums.

If you had actually read this thread, you would have noticed that I referenced the mods who had previously posted the same things in this thread that  I was posting. I also talked about CEO Erik's post apologizing for a server crash last summer and Martin Stahl's post. It hardly seems logical for me to say that mods never come to the forum. However, it is true that 9 out of 10 complaints here go without a direct response from the staff. That leaves a void that some of us try to fill.

I have never tried to be a mod. I try to give help to people who are new users. Occasionally, I have to deal with new people like you who seem to be here only to incite arguments in threads disparaging the site. Your very first post on what must  have been your first day complained about not being able to use abort as often as you liked. How is that working out for you? https://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/blocking-a-player-1

I experience the "you have disconnected ... " message with, say, every tenth game. I don't disconnect. But the game is aborted by the site. The chess.com site is the only one I use that does such things. If things don't get better, I will not renew my membership.

I enjoy playing chess on chess.com and 've been playing for 1.5 yrs, both on my PC en iPad.
Lately I experience frequently  problems when I play on my PC, I noticed that the clocks have stopped; I disconnect/connect a number of times (>5) and suddenly the clocks are back again and .... I lost 4 minutes (and loose the game). What can I do about that?

For the website, some things you can try.

I kinda want my money back. Whether it’s me or my opponent, winning due to a timeout is not satisfying. I’m a bullet player and this just isn’t reliable
