Flagging in Drawn Positions

Towards the end of a game, my opponent tried to flag me by premoving his bishop . . . I had a pawn against his bishop. His king was blocking my pawn and he could take it whenever he wanted, but instead he just premoved his bishop again and again . . .Game managed to end in a draw because of the fifty-move rule.

It's pretty exasperating when this happens. Has anyone else experienced losing to this cheap way to win?

Neither of you were going to win the game, why not offer a draw much earlier

The point isn't that they didn't think of offering a draw, the point is you get an opponent who only wants to win regardless of the position. So they pre move in order to win on time.

It's a vicious circle. You are the dumb dumbs to start a fast game, then you complain about not having enough time to play.

What I do is put a lot of time on the clock with unrated games and expect quick moves. If an interesting position comes up, then you give more time to look into it. You talk with your opponent. If you move, there is a forced trade, and your opponent stalls then either quit the game, play someone else, or talk with them about the stall. Sometimes I have to go to the bathroom so there are legit reasons.

But don't expect draws with fast games.

Don’t you have to have sufficient material to win in order to win on time? I could be wrong but in my understanding of how C.c determines the outcome when time is up, a player with only a bishop and king could only draw at best. So if i were in your shoes, and didn’t have enough time left to flag him, i would just let the clock run out on my turn, assuming C.c would call it a draw. Am i wrong about that?

@blastforme agreed. Can't you just do that?

Of course, it depends on the pawn. If it's a rook pawn, then technically mate is possible, so you can't let your clock run out.

you are absolutely correct.  it was impossible for black to win this game either on the board or on time. Only a mistake by black would allow white to win. Both players were wasting their time after K+p vs K+B position arose

Whining

It's really unfair because a draw is a draw.

Not quite true black could still win this in an absurd but possible way here it is:

So it is possible in theory but that it happens in practice the chances are about less than 0.1% basically it's never happening but that means that you can't claim insufficient mating material. But let's face it this should be a complete draw and I think you should have draw instead of trying to flag your opponent. A good way to avoid these tricks being played on you is by playing with increment so either 3+2 or 2+1 are popular ones where you can't run out of time in those positions.
