I play chess to bust my opponent's ego. When he goes back that night he knows that he isn't that hot.

Wait.

That was Robert James Fischer.

Sorry about that. Sometimes I channel the departed spirits of chess players. Not a good habit to get into.

First i have to say we all must like punishment as at some time we all have a period of struggling here over a period of time. Which creates a challenge to elimante the amount of times this we get beat in game.

All looking for more creative ways to wins. As of recently i learned that chess has a built in defense on both sides if a player uses it. So if your opponent makes no major mistake it will be a tough game.

Chess is funny! At times i have used a strong opening and i win but the game goes the distance. Other times i pick out a weak opening randomly against the same level of player and they get slaughtered regardless of rank. Not sure why? Maybe they think i would not play it so it catches them off guard.

On the other end some us have been caught by tricks we know we should have not be caught by in games. Tried a plan and thought for sure it will be a brillant win and lose. Then realized where you made a miscalculation. After the game we find the exception to the theory used in the game.

I like to crush opponents who talk so much smack and win at the end of the game say nothing in response to winning. I like the thrill of turning what was a lost situation into a possiblle draw and due to a recent mistake i might be position to win by forcing mate. It is great to see the practice you but in for a week show in a game to show it was worth it. Or maybe you just spent a nice amount of money on some books and want to see some type of quick improvement to show the bood is worth it.

Not going to lie about one of my biggest. When my opponent is real vocal about losing the game. When they want that rematch it makes me smile. Then to beat them again soundly. Even better when it is face to face. And like most of us we play around with them and try something else that might not be as strong and still win. Losing makes winning that much more special.

Chess is the only game on this planet where you can not blame anybody for losing. You moved the pieces. Your responsiblity for improving. You picked the opening or defense. You decided when to move. Each side gets a turn back and forth. No Refs and the viewers have to stay quiet. 32 Pieces and board is the basic requirement to play the game over and over again day or night, rain or sunshine. Get to the best play for free as the game moves are recorded. No timeouts and no quarters or periods during the game. The game has variations for time being played and can be played as team with each member playing on a board from board 1 to board ??. Or maybe as a team in Vote Chess against a team or a GM. Most of all many games will start the same in the first couple moves but none will ever end the same!

But my serious answer is that I play chess for the times when I get into the zone or as Jim Courier would say, get my Mojo going; the pieces coordinate well and it goes well.

It's a good way to avoid dealing with the rest of the universe, since the chess board and pieces are a self-contained universe - or a Black Hole from which there is no escape for anyone addicted to the game.

I wonder NimzoRoywhat it would be like to be on a space ship playing a game of chess as your cross over the EVENT HORIZIONMultidimensional chess game ANYONE?

P.S. My FAV 2 movie on the subject:

Event Horizon (1997)

Starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill

The Black Hole (1979)

Starring Robert Forster, Maximilian Schell

P.S.S. look at the yr there made in ;-)  A little semi-symmetrical

Hmmm not to hard to read in between the lines here.

No space ship here for me. That way no way to get stranded and play the same people over and over again because we stuck in some time dimensional loop and never getting older. Do not want to meet some aliens and show them how to play the game and later get crushed as they play it for the first time and say easy game. Grrrr. Plus i am pretty sure no Internet connection under these situations which means no chess.com.

I am a Chess Addict and want to a living chess addict! I will not tempt anything.

I don't want to be a party pooper, but traversing the event horizon would mean you're dead or as good as.

Stanley Kubric was quoted as saying, "Chess helps you develop patience and discipline in choosing between alternatives at a time when an impulsive decision seems very attractive."

AndyClifton

This coming from a guy who took 5 years to make a movie (maybe he could've been a bit more impulsive for a change)...
