This is indeed a common choice, as En Passant usually occurs within the first few moves of the game, and since you have 50 moves left before being asked to make a choice, you're not forced to make subsequent captures. In this case, En Passant is the only move that keeps the game going, so if you want to continue, you must capture both pieces. In short, this is an option, or rather, a forced option
Thanks for the answer, ThrillerFan.
SallyVIII, you should look up the definition of "troll." Legtimate questions about chess rules do not constitute trolling. Calling someone a troll, however, very well might.
Interestingly, this question was debated during the 19th century, according to Wikipedia. It was Howard Staunton, an English master, who definitively answered that the move IS required. If anyone has a source on some of the debate, I should like to see it. It has always occured to me that en passant is a choice, and as such, cannot be compelled.
It is a choice by normal occurrences as En Passant is usually in the opening few moves and as you have 50 other moves to U are not compelled to take and forfeit doing so on subsequent moves. In this scenario it is your only move that keeps the game going and so you need to take as the white moved two squares. Its either a choice or your forced.
