Foul Language

It's really interesting to me how a good number of chess players are so foul with their comments. I would think a game like this would attract intelligent players, but it never ceases to amaze me how whiney and annoying some are.
I wonder what is going through their skull to be so obnoxious and why come to a chess site to unleash their stench?
Its the annonymity of the internet. It doesnt take a whole lot of anything to sit in front of a monitor and abuse someone.
I keep hearing about abusive morons, but I don't encounter them. I usually play 15/10 and 3 day games. Are the bad sports and potty mouths more common in blitz?

Certainly I don't care, and do realize it is the internet - it doesn't bother me, but it does shock me when I kill some player (at BLITZ) and then they post comments on my user name/page.. I see it a few days later and I'm like WTH?
And yes, it would probably be more common in Blitz - seeing as the game is so quick and less time to get invested into it.

I think the implication is that intelligence is usually related to having a higher understanding of people and a higher tolerance of others. That is not always the case.
There is also a stereotype about intelligent "nerds" being very introverted and nonconfrontational. Typically, this is paired with a physical stature that lowers or limits confidence when facing more dominant figures. Again, it is not always the case.
But the variable here is anonymity. The internet allows a shield for individuals to express some of their inner thoughts without the consequences they would otherwise face in the real world. This cultivates an arena where people are able to look down on every single person they encounter because there is no physical intimidation. It limits any sort of interaction to a level of intelligence, where those "nerds" feel much more confident to the point of feeling superior to anyone else. This causes a lot of people to be much more aggressive than they would be in a real world situation.
My personal thought is that people want to express things that have been done to them. ie. If you were bullied, you will be a bully in anonymity. So I tend to feel bad for those that are rude and aggressive online. It makes me believe they have had a rough life.

Yes it is much more common in blitz, and seems to be more prevelant with lower rated players. But obviously, being an idiot can strike anyone at anytime.

Why do you think that intelligence is necessarily opposed to being whiney, annoying, obnoxious and foul-mouthed?
Intelligent people tend to be able to communicate better. Let's be realistic, if you are questioning this then you're just trolling.

I also can't help but wonder a bit about the OP when I see something like this in his notes:
rude and a runner

but that's my point.. I don't even "chat" or write anything during games. In 1 min Lghtning or Blitz who has time for that? And about "running" - of course, if you are down and time is running out, then go for a little job around the board. It's Blitz for crying out loud, you're playing a 1 min game, what do people expect?

Presumably, intelligent people also keep an open mind about things...
Huey, I didn't realize you were the same poster for both "unusual" responses. You're just a [shit distruber] or a troll. Either way you're probably one of those annoying jerks in tourneys.

Rest assured that huey and kaynight will troll any and all posts. As long as you understand what youre dealing with they arent a big deal.
The winter flu season has been brutal with me. I have become expert in speaking Phlegmish.

yup, thanks for the tip. I'm not in the forums often enough to recognize the trolls. lol

Youre welcome. They arent bad members, they just dont contribute anything of substance.
