I am posting this forum to try to learn a little about what is going through peoples minds when they attempt a four move checkmate. Can it actually raise your self-esteem when you beat the very inexperienced player who actually falls for it?What’s the point???

to be honest, it is kind of fun. I only employ it against friends as a bit of a joke.

Well, it's usually one inexperienced playing using it on another. For them, i'd say yes, it does raise their self-esteem.

I use it all the time.  In fact, it's practically the only way I win.  Trust me, they never see it coming!  I don't just use the typical old scholar's mate though... I've developed my own special foolproof ninja version.

Sure it lacks subtlety but it is often one of the first plans a early chess player has.  They see mate on f7 (or f2) and they go for it.  Is it easily parried ? yes.  But it is a plan, and the way the opponent goes about deflecting the attack can start creating other weaknesses that can be exploited.

Also being mated in four holds valueable lessons for the person slapped in the face with a wet fish.
