The Franklin Mercantile Library closed in 1989.  The building at 1021 Chestnut Street was slated for renovation according to this article in 2012. However, it appears that the renovation did not occur, and the building became available again in 2014.

I played my first OTB game in ... 30 years? ... at Franklin Mercantile Chess Club last Friday.     Thoroughly enjoyed myself - despite, among other things, hanging my queen

I live a bit far outside of Philadelphia to stop by on any sort of recurring basis but I was in the city for the day and decided to go check it out.

If you're looking for a landmark, The Bards Irish Pub is across the street from the Franklin Mercantile chess club.  The club itself is down a flight of steps. Look for the white rectangular sign.

I was riding the Philly Phlash ($5- all day loop) and noticed that the club was about 4 short blocks from one of the Phlash stops.    So I hopped off,  took a five minute walk and ... played some chess.

Then I walked back to the stop, hopped back on the Phlash, and, eventually, headed home.

This is the Google street view with my annotation.

Washington Square Park has a lot of hustlers. The Marshall Chess Club is on West 10th Street in NYC. They have tournaments almost daily. Google the website which has a calendar of events.
