This month's show is going to be much longer, around 2.5 hours, so I'll be able to cover many more games. As always, write your thoughts down, don't just give me moves!

And now for my dogmatic rant: studying your own games is the path to chess improvement.

Sorry, didn't know the protocol here. My feeling on the game as far as I recall was that I failed to get any opening advantage and got thrown on the defensive in the middlegame.

I was being attacked, down in material and was close to giving up hope.

I figured my only hope was to counter-attack the king position like a lunatic, and it worked - surprisingly.

I don't know how to post comments within the moves, so I have to do it here. These are from the notes I take when I'm playing a Daily Chess game.

Move 12. I considered Nf3.
Move 13. I considered c3 and Nxd6.
Move 14. I considered Nxc3, but wanted to keep my knight in the center and avoid an isolated d pawn.
Move 20. I considered developing the bishop, but wanted to get my knight back into play.
Move 22. I considered Bf4 and Kf1. I played Be3 to keep the rook off e2.
Move 24. I considered c4, Re1, Kf1, and Kh2.
Move 26. I considered a4, Rb1, Re1, Kf1, and Kh2. a4 allows b4.
Move 27. I considered Kf1 and Kh2, but I want to activate my rook.
Move 36. I considered Kb4, but I have to stop the passed pawn.
Move 39. I considered Bf4, but unless Black tries to advance a queenside pawn, that doesn't do anything.

When I reviewed the game, I felt I should have played Ne5+ on move 28. Allowing Black to double my pawns was a mistake, and it hurt me later because my king had to keep an eye on the h pawn. Even with my extra piece, I couldn't find a way to win this game because I knew if I got careless, Black could do a breakthrough on the queenside to create a passed pawn, and I thought my bishop wouldn't be able to get back in time to stop it because my pawns would be in its way. My opponent, a much stronger player than I am, didn't see a way I could win either.

Castles followed by Re1 was more appropriate. } 11...b6 12.g4? { Simply a terrible way to try and beat someone several hundred points lower than him! A quote from @CheesyPuns: "Rawr lets play g4 and castle queenside and wreck this kid..." sounds pretty accurate. I punished this move as follows... } 12...Ne4!! 13.Bxe7 Qxe7 14.Bxe4 dxe4 15.Nd2 Nf6 16.O-O-O { Qa4 was necessary to prevent my next move... } 16...Ba6! { Say "hello", d3 square! } 17.Qa4 Bd3 18.Rdg1 { The race begins, though Black has much more momentum. } 18...c5! { BOOM! } 19.Nb3 cxd4 20.Nxd4 Rec8 21.g5 Nd5 22.gxh6 Nxc3 23.bxc3 Rxc3+ { I'm obviously crashing through... so is White, though once again, my attack is faster! } 24.Kb2 Rac8 25.Rxg7+ Kh8 26.Rhg1 { Looks scary! :-O } 26...R3c4 27.h7 { This was a move that initially scared be because of Rg8+ threats. I thought for a moment I had busted it. With a large time advantage, I wisely sucked up some time to restore my brilliant game. It turns out I played the wrong move, though it ended up having similar ramifications to the move that should have been played. } 27...Qe5?! { It turns out, Qf6 was much better, threatening f2 and Rc2+ (the Knight is pinned). } 28.Qb3?? { My opponent was in time trouble, and did not find the variation which would have given me the most grief. } ( 28.Rg8+! Kxh7 29.R1g5! { If my Queen moves, certain perpetual checks would follow. } 29...Rc2+ 30.Qxc2 Rxc2+ 31.Kb3 Qxg5 { I have to give her up to avoid perpetual. } 32.Rxg5 Rxf2 { And yes, Black is a pawn up in the endgame, though the game was not nearly what it was a few moves ago. I would have to "re-win" the game against a master! } ) 28...Rc2+ 29.Kb1 R2c3+ 30.Ka1 Rc1+ 31.Kb2 R8c2+ 32.Ka3 Qa5+ 33.Qa4 Rxa2+ 34.Kxa2 Qxa4+ { Game over. } 0-1

Hi Jesse, This is Vishnu, we exchanged a couple of emails last month. I just saw your offer to analyze a few games for free. I'm posting a game of mine against a 2078 rated player (I'm around 1600) that I played at the NIH. This is a game I lost but the following week, I beat a 2000 rated player with black which I haven't analyzed yet, so I'll post the game that I lost instead (no worries if you find some of the other games more interesting/instructive to present in your show):

Thank you for analyzing my game last time.  If you have time, here is a more recent one, a draw against a lower rated player, and the game felt pretty lifeless.  Any insight, for either side, would be appreciated.
