Almost all free trial offers require a credit card to sign up and for you to remember to cancel in time. Also, most subscription models have auto-renewal if you do not cancel that. The same is true here and the fact is pretty clear when purchasing (or it was when I did my initial purchase).
The site also has a 30-day money back guarantee, on a one-time basis, but you have to open a ticket to request it. Finally, if you do get a renewal, if you forget to cancel, the site is very good with refunding that as well, from everything I have seen, if you open a ticket when it happens.
There is no scam; just have to watch what it being bought

I'm pretty sure there is a way to purchase a year and then cancel the renewal piece.

This site is a good deal. The only reason to cancel a premium membership is because the basic is good too. For $2 per month, I can't complain. No ads, and I'm supporting the site. Although, maybe you are supporting them by letting the ads run.
