Also, you can contact "Nathan Kelly" through Facebook (he responds to everyone and has become the heart of chess in Chicago) or the "Chicago Chess Blitzers" page on Facebook, where everyone is friendly and willing to give info. There are a lot more events in the MidWest, if you are willing to drive a bit, too.
I haven't lived there for a couple of years, but - as I recall - Touch Move (in Edgewater) was always open on Friday nights. No A/C in the summer, and it's mostly IM Angelo Young and his family pounding your face like a drum, but it's still excellent fun. The Evanston chess club is the best established, and there's a better rating range, but it's Evanston, so the el doesn't just drop you off there. They have tournaments once a month (or did), but it was just blitz; I don't think they do classical with any regularity.
There are also a huge number of informal chess clubs on the south side. I went to an event around 85th and State, and there were a couple of pretty decent players (1600+) recruiting for their neighborhood chess clubs that meet in restaurants, libraries, and such.
Honestly, for such a big city, I was really surprised at how little Chicago has to offer, chess wise. I still get emails from the Chicago chess center people.....they're trying to build a real club, bless 'em. It's just hard to get off the ground.
I was wondering if there are any rated tournaments in or within an hour's drive of Chicago on Friday nights. I've checked the USCF TLA, USCF Clubs page, and the Illinois Chess Association, but I didn't see anything, but I also know that probably half of all non-major chess events are not listed.
I'll be driving up from Souther Indiana, so suggestions for Friday night rated chess in mid-/northern Indiana is welcome, too. It doesn't seem like West Lafayette has anything.
