Although I have a quad core it isn't fantastic ( acouple of years old). What would you suggest to stop the sluggishness when I move the pieces against fritz 14. Shut off the online features, lower hash table, reduce number of cores (how to)?

Any ideas. My fritz 14 is running really crummy. Thx.

You can prevent many programs from starting on boot up by waiting until the computer starts first. Next enter "msconfig" in the box next to programs. Hit "enter" and another box will open with five tabs. Two of the tabs will give you the capabilty of stopping some processes and programs from starting on boot up. You can also check which programs or processes are using the most cpu time by simultaeously pressing the ctrl alt and delete keys at the same time. Google the information here, especially the msconfig info because you can turn something off that is required and cause a serious problem. I am just telling you how I do it on my computers.

How much memory for hash tables has Fritz 14 grabbed?

You might try reducing it, I've got an older version of Fritz that runs  better and gets a much higher FritzMark score when I reduce the hash table size down to 128 Meg.

The fritz 14 engine is terrible and you should replace it with just about anything. But another option is to reduce the amount of CPUs its using, hit "Infinite Analysis" that opens up the chess engine window where you can change the number of CPUs.
