Your probably right. I don't know enought about copyrights, intelectual property, royalties, compensation, etc. I just know the music industry is in the toilet.

As far as I know people are still making music and were making music long before a "music industry" existed.  In the long history of humanity a "music industry" is just a blip and a artificial construct.  Free the music!

Beautiful! music is meant to be shared.

I'm talking about long before the music GET'S to the cloud. Your a free member here and you posted "music is to be shared". I assume you want free movies too along with books and everything else. Look, the OP just wants the pirated copies out of India. Because the're a poor country that's  gonna be a little difficult. China has a lot of pirates also. Hell, Hollywood's got a lot of pirates.

Are you denying that music is to be shared? where do you play your music?in your bedroom for your legions of action figures? why don't you simply stop assuming what people mean, its not that difficult and no i dont want free movies infact there are hardly any movies and especially not American movies that I desire to watch and all the books that I desire I can buy or borrow from the public library.  Flip sake even scrooge was forced to eventually give a turkey away.

soundlcoud is awesome, so much original music that would never come if it was left up to the music industry, all they do is pump money into crap and create an environment so that they can sell their music. All the kids are taking it and creating thousands of different flavours.

I can understand authors wishing to protect their copyright. I can also understand people getting pirate copies - especially if the chess videos and software are overpriced as they invariably seem to be. I imagine there are more pirated videos than originals.

I really want to question this entire piracy is losing revenue complaints.

People still making this complaint don't realize that the music industry has shifted it's model to focus on income from things that can't be digitized.

Now they can let the music go for cheap as a way to get buyers for merchandising and tickets for shows.

At one time, people played music just for the sake of playing music.

At one time, people promoted music because they loved the music, not because it put dollars in their pocket.

Now there is a 'music industry'. A Music Industrial Complex, if you like.

It CHOOSES people and makes them stars for the 1 goal of making money for themselves.

I for one have no love for them and truly would like to see them die off (the music industry, not the people themselves) so we can get back to music for music's sake.

the only people who disagree with intellectual property rights are the ones who have never had any intellectual property of their own to begin with.

If anyone wants free music, no need to bother with Bit Torrent, just let me know and I will upload a few files of me playing the melodica.

Robbie, I know I'm older than you. I'm taking a much bigger look at the whole picture. The musician's union started in the 1870's in Europe and 1904 in the US. But to get back to this thread, piracy is something every recording executive taks seriously. As a result of the physical bootlegging of compact discs, Polygram was forced to exit markets in Asia and Latin America. Bootlegging in those countries is more a product of organized crime syndicates than individual actors.                                  Something like this has happened before in the early 1980's with he introduction of the home audio dual head tape cassette deck. The investment bankers who brought this technology for YOU to use dusted off a 16 yr old analysis of the adversed effects of pirating, written by Alan Greenspan, who is now the chairman of The Federal Reserve Board. His analysis blamed piracy for declining revenues. He found that neither raising or lowering album prices was likely to work. Instead he figured the only way to reverse the sales slump was through an aggressive campaign of law enforcement against the bootleggers.                                You are right about one thing.    "All the kids are taking it and creating thousands of different flavours".                    There's nothing "new" in the cloud that requires copyright protection; its just the same old crap with the same 3 chords in a different package. Where do you think those kids in soundcloud got the're music?Undecided  ans. From all the music that came before them. Don't look at the word "industy" as something dirty or filthy. Its the "industry" that rought YOU soundcloud. I just want musician's to be able to make a living and feed the're family. How much do you think the Red Hot Chilly Pepper's get paid to play The Superbowl? Undecided  Absolutely nothing!Surprised  Its a media gig. Its always been that way. Your pay is being exposed to 300 million people. MCA's catalog is known as the Music Cemetary of America. Now if you'll excuse me I have some drums to go practice. You know, so you can someday download it for free.                                                             https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N90Q6yugakg

I agree with you that Pop is crap, but this thread is about the PIRACY of anything. Music, Movies, Chess, etc. On May 27, 1997 USA Today ran an article by music journalist Bruce Haring--"Sound Advances Open Doors To Bootleggers". It was the 1st time anyone mentioned the mp3 in mainstream media. By Sept of that year, the incoming class matriculated and a generation of adult adolescents now had the limitless capacity to reproduce and share music files, and neither the income nor the inclination to pay. On websites and underground file servers across the world, the number of mp3 files in existence grew by several orders of magnitude. In dorm rooms everywhere, incoming college freshmen found their hard-drives filled to capacity with pirated mp3's. Music piracy became to the late 90's what drug experimentation was to the late 60's; a generation-wide flouting of both social norms and the existing body of law, with little thought of the consequences.                                                       https://johnnyryan.wordpress.com/2009/04/27/the-mp3-its-origins-and-its-impact/

As an American, I can say that my fellow Americans can't be bothered by some two-bit piraters on the other side of the world in India.  Those dudes are indeed naughty, but the Indian authorities or Interpol, are the ones to contact, chief.

Perhaps you should post your sentiments on their message board.

Let me elaborate on 1 thing. In the late 80's Bill Bennett and Tipper Gore we're on a campaign to clean up the music industry. The industry saw RAP coming and started signing artists. The government wanted labels on albums to protect the children from violent messages, pornagraphic lyrics, etc. The industry scoffed at the mere suggestion of such a thing. Fast forward a few yrs. With mp3's and Napster creating havoc, Executives ran to Congress for assistance. They tried to convince the Department of Justice to go after the more brazen profiteers. Now the shoes on the other foot. The music industry was not well liked on Capitol Hill. The Motion Picture industry had Jack Valenti. A legend on Capitol Hill, at least in part because he bowed to the demands of the culture police and instituted a rating system for movies & TV. Harvey Geller, Universal's chief litigator was told repeatedly that "politicians pander to their constituency and there are more constituents stealing music than there are constituents selling music". The music industry stood alone in its defiant refusal to cooperate and now found itself abandoned by the state. If it wanted to enforce inellectual property rights it would have to do so on its own.

Its because the phrase, "Dude, Soundcloud is awesome & its free". Just doesn't quite cut it in standard entertainment contracts. But take it one step further. Why not free education, free transportation, free food, free medical. We have that already on this planet. Its called Communism and Socialism. Fine arts, liberal arts and performing arts. Dancers, Actors, Authors. They all have unions. The people who actually own the copyright on Fritz have to take the perpetrator to court and show economic loss. Good luck with that.Cry

We are fed up of being lectured by right wing American capitalists always lecturing us on moral philosophy and ethics. You have really no idea what socialism is, serioulsy, you dont. For goodness sake take a look at Norway with its fine socialist tradition which has invested its natural wealth for the benefit of the entire nation resulting in the highest standard of living in the world and compare it with the third world slums in some American cities and now you have the audacity to preach to us about the evils of socialism.  You have NO IDEA what socialism is. People do not mind paying taxes for education, medicine, policing, they want to live in a modern society where people are healthy and educated and safe. Flip sake it's like dragging you from Victorian times to the present day, kicking and screaming with your empty rhetoric about the evils of socialism. Give a turkey away you Scrooge!
