From 1400 to 2000

Hi all,

My first post here on Chess.com. Little bit about myself, I started playing chess last year from around September, I've been reading and playing quite a bit everyday ever since. Got my rating to 1400 right now and I really want to get more serious with chess. I have been going through all sorts of materials such as puzzles for tactics and watching videos, but it seems like my improvement is just slowing down.

As many people say, rating is just a number(I think the original phrase is age is just a number but this applies too?) But it is a good scale in my opinion, to measure the differences in skill levels. My question is, how much better are 2000 players than me? And question #2 is how can I bring myself to that level?

1) How much better. Difficult to say, but one measure is theoretical winning probability of 1400 Elo versus 2000 Elo. The 1400 will win 3.07% of the time.

2) How to get there. I don't know yet, but this is how I am trying:

Surprising discrepancies from 100% are more likely to be draws. It is significantly more difficult to beat a strong player than to draw against them. Smile

Fair point. I didn't read the detail, just entered numbers into a calculator. I guess it would be more correct to say the 2000 is expected to win 97% of the time.

Or 94% of the time, plus 6% draws, or something between, with a mix of losses and draws. I'm pretty sure you mean they get 97% of the points.

Never mind percentages - a 2,000 player is of a very high standard, too much for me unless they blunder badly (highly unlikely). They will win easily every time against a 1,400 player, unless they hang their Queen or something. Bear in mind that a 1,400 player on chess.com is about 1,300 FIDE. To the OP, it's natural that your improvement will slow down, and you've done brilliantly to get so far in such a short time. You've just begun embarking on the learning curve :-)
