I believe most DGT boards work by something in the piece interacting with the board. How easy electronic board works is going to be different, depending on manufacturer and model.

The board itself won't record your game but it is an input device as an alternative to a mouse that can be used with apps or websites (such as chess.com) that will allow all sorts of database functionality.
