You were trying to show off and oversimplify.
I am much stronger than most of my friends in RL, but once i was losing badly but still managed to nab my oponent's queen, he was covered in sweat and happy that the game was over, had massive headache later. Wining position is not enough :-)
The first time i played 1800+, i was losing (down a knight) and manged to make a nice combination getting me a pawn ahead, but i lost on time (my oponenet played a move imediately instead of his usual 3 day delay and i was very busy at the time).
