All pieces and pawns are men, including the Queen. They aren't "characters" as someone else asserted.

So the Queens are actually Drag Queens?
I guess we must make some serious offtopic about rook's gender, it could lead to some serious implications in gender studies. Also i must admit that it is impressive how little pawn can be promoted to a rook, that makes me think differently about my career :|

Only if you drag them across the chess board and don't pick them up when you move.
Pawns - Represent the common person of the kindgom. They are male and female.
The Rooks - Represent the Castles in the Kingdom, defended by both Male and Females within.
The Bishops - Represent the organized Church of the kingdom. Bishops have been historically male but in the last several generations, females have begun to be ordained more. So they are most likely male but a higher percentage of them are female each year.
The Knight - Represents the Knights of the Kingdom. Again, traditionally this would be a male as women are not knighted but given Damehood. If one wants to consider the Knight a combination of Knight and Dame (the way we consider mankind a combination of male and female), that would seem reasonable.
The Queen - Is female, except in certain parts of town.
The King - Is Male. The Queen is more powerful but needs the figurehead of the male king to enact her wishes, and as such, the King takes his orders from the Queen.
