Complications, imbalance, same thing. Although "complications" entails more than a little imbalance
Sometimes you walk the fine line between imbalanced/unclear and obvious disadvantage though.
You can do it by sacrificing for an attack or for passed pawns for example. Or when they're attacking / creating threats instead of making certain defensive moves you create counter threats immedaitely.
A well known example was when Topolov was trying to avoid a rapid playoff with Anand in the world championship match. So he played for complications to the extreme. In a dull position that would almost certainly have been a draw he started advancing his kingside pawns and went for an all or nothing attack.
