Maybe you're reading books that are too hard. You have to read books that are appropriate for your level.

I don't dream chess, either.

Just play, do 1 or 2 move puzzles and try not to hang your pieces.

I koew it was time for me to quit playing in tournaments when i was having a difficult time keeping the positions clear in my head.  I simply dont have the desire to think that much anymore.

Just keep reading the same diagram over and over until you can clearly visualise whatever position it's trying to show you, or just play the moves out on a digital/real board.
