Strange, I just looked him up and he is rated, 1943 for regular, 1927 for quick. Unrated for blitz only. This is on USCF, not FIDE.

If you're going to make accusations, learn to search properly.

Well that'll teach me to respond to another poster's claim of having looked up a person on USCF . ..

If they are just beginning then charge $30.

If they are 1000+ charge $40,

If 1400+ then $50.

And make sure you put that your the 12th best player in your state in your advertisements...Wink

Oh I see nevermind I would Give teaching for free I do not believe gaining money from Chess by teaching youngsters has as big a value as doing it for free

unless you need money

I've found coaching for free to be largely a waste of time, for all concerned. If they're not paying then they're not learning. Money concentrates the student's thoughts.

If one tries to make a living (partially at least) from chess I don't think you can eat the value you get for doing it for free..

If thet can get free coaching in their local club then don't stop them.

@ Carolus, In the state I'm in, there's nothing like that here in our small clubs. We only have a few experts here.

True but I am a member of a club and had a 2000+ rated coach who did it for nothing . Whats to stop the parants from sending them to a club To get free coaching?

There's been some good suggestions here, so I'll add a different one. How much would you be embarassed to take? If they offered you 200/hour, you'd probably tell them that's too much. If they wanted the lessons for free, you'd feel you were being ripped off. Find your own high-and-low and go from there. Maybe start off low (I always did first session free, then $10/hr. I'm not 1900, but I'm a good teacher) and then go to a 'regular' rate after you've established that you're a good pick.

how do you become a good teacher?? i want to be one too

I did some education research in college, was a teaching assistant for 5 years, did some online tutoring as well, and I've always had a bit of a knack for it. So, like everything else, practice =).

Oh, and patience. ...lots of patience.

The kids don't give a damn what it costs. The parents are paying. If a child wants to learn, then it will learn. If it doesn't, then send it home.

I would never attempt to teach a child, money or not. I could see myself throttling him, after some cocky remark or act of petulance.

Postal chess from a cell, does not appeal.

From the perspective of both a guitar teacher and scuba instructor: it is amazing how much the parents will influence how seriously a kid takes things if they're paying money for it . . .
