Also, don't let anyone tell you that you can only get back pieces that you've lost.  I remember a few people trying to pull that crap when I was a kid.

 

Yes, you can promote pawns.

 

Yes, each pawn can promote to a queen, rook, bishop, or knight, regardless of what is already on or off of the board.

I tried to promote a pawn to a King once, but that was frowned upon...
