I think the average is 1350, and a good enough rating to be proud for a non pro is 1800. Of course when i say enough to feel proud, i'm talking about my own subjective standards. For the 2800 playes would be like "oh, 1800, yes, i remember when i was 3 years old, i was proud of my 1800".

I think it is a learning curve kind of thing. For example, for an 11 year old kid who just learned 2 years ago, 1200 is a good rating, but for a 30 year old man who constantly plays in tournaments and is very serious and has been playing for over 15 years, a rating of 1800 is good. I am closer to category #1, obviously, and I am pretty proud of my rating considering how long I have been playing chess, and that I would be rated higher (probably around 1220 slow chess) if it weren't for my recent losses on time.

Anyway, what I mean by all that is, the average rating is different for everyone...you can't put one number on everyone as the "average" because you can't judge a 10 year old and a 40 year old the same!
