Why do people offer draw while losing?

OTB...I have had people offer me a draw in winning, and losing positions.

I have offered draws in winning, and losing positions.

All for varying reasons.

I'll offer a draw when I'm down, just on the off chance that my opponent accepts and I can scrap a draw out of a losing position, but I never just go offline while in a losing position and let time expire. Whenever someone does that to me, I immediatly rate the person in question as a poor sport, but most of the time never go so far as to report them to chess.com. I don't offer the draw out of not being able to lose - I just would rather take a 1/2 point instead of a loss. I don't try to be cocky about it, I realise I'm in a losing position, and I know that I'll try and pull a stalemate, so I might as well send the draw offer as well. I won't keep offering draws though, unless the position happens to change drastically from me being down a piece, to put a piece, to down a piece again, or something along those lines.

Everyone loses....except Capablanca.  And even he lost 34 times.

I believe it's just fine to offer a draw when losing....it's about trying their chances that the winning opponent doesn't realise he is winning.....perfectly fine...because if someone doesn't know when he is winning, he doesn't really deserve it...

They are asking for mercy so then you should just decline the draw.

Newbie419

It happened to me all the time, i think they always do it so it will be a fair game maybe because i torture them with my "Wayward queen attack" but its just a small thing to report about

because a draw is all they can win?
smitshreyas

multiple reasons

1. u wil keep safe ur winning streak

2. it wil save ur rank

3 it wil not count as lose

IcyAvaleigh
it actually stops your winning streak right?

I think it stands to reason that nobody's going to offer a draw while winning.

Omega_Doom

They want to resign but click the wrong button.

IcyAvaleigh is right. Because when you are in a loosing situation, the one who is about to loose looses nothing if the opponent accepts the draw. Basically, it's a last ditch effort to minimise their loss, since nobody likes loosing.

"why do they offer draw while losing? is this normal?"

This has to be one of the dumbest questions ever! Why do people offer a draw when losing? Because they'd rather have a draw than a loss. Pretty simple isn't it. A better question would be: Why do you care?

mahone20

thats a fair question, i saw it on queens gambit too. is it a tradition?

I find it very strange when someone proposes draw when they find out they have no chance. I have this thought that it is polite to offer draw when you see you’re in a great advantage or when your adversary makes some stupid move that compromises the game. But asking it when you see you’ve lost? I think it’s ridiculous especially when they open attacking like a fierce pitbull and then I catch them at a wrong move. I don’t know. What do you guys think of it?

I accept all those draw offers. I don't give a flip about my Blitz rating. I just want to move on to the next game as fast as possible.

Can I play you?

I'm one of those older nerds who remembers playing over the board in am in-person ches club. In those days chess etiquette was something of the rule. Offering a draw in an obviously losing position was considered bad form. You would get flamed for it if you did it without a good reason. I know that those days are gone, but I still maintain the romantic notion that chess is a "gentleman's game" (now it would be call "gentleperson's game"). I don't get all bent out of shape if someone offers a draw when they are losing, and I most often accept. Chess.com ratings don't matter to me. What I do object to are players who chat "move faster" when they are playing a 15 min game. I don't intentionally milk the clock, but I'm not a blitz or bullet player. If one wants to force their opponent to play faster, then play blitz or bullet. Don't try to do that by being a rude jerk.
