Is this game a gentlemen's game or what?? Half the clowns i play won't aknowledge me when i simply say hello. What a joke when one does not have the courtesy to type a word....BULLSHIT. It is not like i plan to chat all day!!!

If I felt like chatting, I'd enter a chat room. Just play.

What sort of sick, twisted, hellish being could could dare refuse to say hello?? Bull indeed!! I mean, do these idiots just think I'm saying hello to myself? How arrogant of them to focus on the game when I clearly necessitate their attention! I think chess.com needs to institute a new rule that if someone types hello and their opponent doesn't reply within 30 seconds, they are banned, regardless of what language they speak, what device they're playing on, or what have you!

I agree, a simple "hello" in reply is a common courtesy.  When you say "hello" and they ignore it, it's like extending your hand to shake before a game and they refuse.  I guess most people are just focusing on winning too much to extend courtesy back to their opponent.

And it's not a language barrier thing, because it happens to me mostly with people from English-speaking countries.

I'm not sure if you're referring to online chess or live chess, but when someone logs into live chess from an Android phone app, they don't have the function there to be able to see or reply to chat.

When i was testing it, i did leave a message on my opponents homepages letting them know this as i didn't want them thinking me rude. I wasn't able to see if they were chatting to me or not.

so the correct response to hello is bull....  i have been doing it wrong the whole time.

quarki - but premium members should have hellocation of 30 minutes a year or something.

live chess or online chess doesn't make any difference. I've played 60+ moves games in online chess and never seen any reply

Maybe he should get some pointers from Jonathan Swift on it.

I have found that some of my best discussions with opponents have actually taken place after, rather than during the games played. But I agree that use of descriptives like "clowns" and "idiots" will stifle rather than promote gentlemanly conversation. With international play here, let's acknowledge there may be some language barriers as well.

I don't always respond immediately, because opening moves can be tricky.. I wait  for the ...lull...before ..the storm.

Which creates the perfect situation when "hello" is being said at the middlegame. In OTB, YOu would just shake your opponents hand , the same hand with which he is going to move his rook in a critical position.

But, no infants get eaten.  That's pretty lame.  I'm sure 'quarki could do better given the opportunity.

I think that when a game commences, the server should automatically posts a "Hello" into the chat box on behalf of either player, and likewise, when the game ends, the server should automatically post "gg" from the winning player, and "fy" (or "fu" -- we can make which one an optional preference selected by the user) from the losing player.

I think "Hello", "Hi", is at least expected.  I usually get more, since I think the majority of us are not completely illiterate.

So far this is what I've come up with. Those who don't say hello, or good game, are left with an actual lost tempo considering the board and table. They indeed have room to grow. And if they win, they have a chance to gain a tempo.

What I believe is that this same thought pattern is reinforced by the predominating GM's standing. This gives us a tempo in understanding such a consideration, and likewise a room for future growth.

What we are left with is a question of character and the game. The only probable outcome (forgive my lack of expressive speech) is that our character, which lends itself to our individual game, will - and should - flourish. So much the better when you find an opponent who likes to add communication to the parlay to play, and the recurring game!

Until I have found the stance that only more study can gain; I block many that confront my unconventional heart. Hopfully for my study, and future game, its for their sake.                 -Pattern-
