Chess need more players like Tal, simple as that. Be prepared to lose, but if you win, it will be beautiful.

That appears correct according to the figures given, but I can't accept it for some reason, it seems like it should be a much larger ratio, like one out of every several thousand. 

Are we making some fundamental math error? I can't believe it's 1 GM  for every 300+ players.

Who uses words like 'vapid' and ' insipid' ? I mean outside of any chatroom at Bore-me-to-death.com ,where you must hold some pretty high rank I assume.

I agree with you. The big thing in this calculation is rated players. Fide only has 420.000 members if their database isn't lying to me. These are the more serious players, so I can imagine that they contain a large pool of strong players. This site has almost 9 million accounts. Some double, not all active, but there are many more people who play chess without a rating. It's a shame we don't know how many active chess players there really are. But but again, clubplayers. These are all clubplayers.
