Talent is the ability to study hard - GM Vladimir Kramnik

I love this sentence and I am one of the positive guys who thinks that everybody on this world can Do it. If you really want to reach something you can reach it :)

Once you start blaming pre-destination or claiming "it was meant to be" you are leaning into the world of religeon.  But the fact is some of us are just not clever enough, its as simple as that.  So then if your thing is to become a GM - go for it - but if you don't make it then perhaps (like me) you are just lacking in determination or we are just not as clever as we think. But nothing can be blamed on pre-destination or fate.

However - what ever your designs are I wish you the very best

I think if some one who use to have talent but cant really use it he/she already failed. For many reasons such as not having right things to use or not enough money to spend on it,and many other... back in 2009 i had the chance to talk to a gm he was my friends coach and he came around our club i asked you are a gm and im sure you have a lot of talent ! he said not really i use to work many hours on every single thing on chess while many of friends they think chess is bad game and you cant have fun with it he said that you just need to work hard with that you can reach any kind of rating but you should use talent to remember the patterns on your game not like putting many hours on learning and after a day you almost forgot what you study last night.

I think GMs use proper punctuation and grammar...

I think it's fine (his writing that is). The thread is on becoming a GM, not an English teacher (I am one already, but I don't think it was predestined).

I think many people can get close to being a GM (and certainly a master level), but getting to the GM level does assume a certain degree of talent for pattern recognition and tactical shots. Maybe there is still hope for me....:)

why? Are you stupid?

Its odd that some people think reaching " master level " is not hard at all .  I would like to point out that there are several US states and even countries without a single master in them .  If it were so easy to do I certainly dont think this would be the case ...

Hi NM Reb. What rating is needed to be NM? I am rated 2012, so do I need to get to 2100 or to 2200? Or is 2000 already NM?

Avatar of TheOldReb

In the USA you need a rating of 2200 or higher to get NM ( USCF rating ) , I also made NM in Portugal for having a FIDE rating over 2200 .  These are OTB classic ( slow ) chess ratings . In the US 2000-2199 is  expert ( candidate master ) .

Avatar of learning2mate

United state chess federation requires a 2200 uscf rating for the national master title.

Avatar of Till_98

Okay so in the US I would be a candidate master? Wow that sounds nice :D Bad that in Germany there arent titles under FM(2300)

Avatar of TheOldReb

FIDE 2200-2299 is CM title now .  Germany doesnt have its own national rating system ?  There used to be ingo-zal ?  ( or something similar )  I played in the Landesliga Nord for one season for SK Franken which was the largest / strongest club from Schweinfurt at the time ...

Avatar of Till_98

It has its own rating system, called DWZ. But I have 2000 in both so Elo is close to DWZ. That means every player in Germany will have Fide and DWZ rating at one point. By the way, you are a very friendly guy. Normally titled players dont answer somebodys questions. Thank you

I agree with scottrf any 2200 blitz is not stupid enough to ask this question. cheater flag.

also the 2700+ are like the all pro of chess, Just because it is a mental sport does not mean everyone has the ability to be that good. It is like asking can I get to be like Payton Manning If I keep throwing the football around and studying film

Avatar of TheOldReb

Are you far from Schweinfurt ?  I really enjoyed my time there and spent a lot of my free time playing chess with the Germans and going to team events with them.

Avatar of Till_98

My dad lived near Schweinfurt when he was young. Now we are living 400 km away from it. But we are often visiting my Grandmother there and it really is very nice there.

Stand up straight, close your eyes, clench your fists and wish with all your might!

helpful hint: It may help to play "We Are the Champions" in the background.

The higher one goes the tighter the bottleneck you'll face.  This is where walls and the law of diminishing returns comes from.  It's why it can take a couple of months to go from 1200 to 1500 but take a couple of years to go from 1500 to expert assuming you're studying the game correctly (Lasker said chess study is usually quite haphazard so many people don't correctly study) and frequently.

At expert and above you'd obviously need more hours of study per rating point gain than at lower levels.
