I think the best time to comment about the quality of the play is during the game, especially while both sides have good prospects.
Something like, 1. e4 "gg"?

sometimes it's just ignored because of apathy or laziness to reply "gg" or because of willingness to play more chess by clicking start game and the challenge being quickly accepted
Sometimes it's ignored, because of rogue chipmonks entering the house, as well. And what about ducks? Sometimes an insecure duck waddles through the living room. We just can't expect that our opponent's homes are as duck-proof as our own.
Huh? Did you just cuss me out in a really polite way ? Because my older sister who is alot older than me .... sorta understood what you just said ... Even tho i didn't and she swears your gay .... not that that would be a problem .... for HER , she forced me to add while in a head lock .
Is your sister making a pass at me?
gg being taken rudely is almost like punching someone for waving goodbye to you - lol. People are so serious. If the game was a good one, I will tell my opponent "good fight". I like those games where it could have went either way, them winning or me. If I say good fight, then I was very happy with the game, win or loss.

I don't know ... i screamed for my mom

I don't entirely agree. I think it's pretty easy for it to come off looking more than a little snide (given the circumstances).
Hey mod, this guy's being abusive again!!!

i don't see the problem
LOL gg ;-)
I wouldn't mind if someone told me "good game" after the end- quite the contrary. But "gg" is stupid, pretty much like several more dozens of Americanisms.

Just kidding...now there's a really stupid "Americanism" courtesy of FOX "NEWS" (sic) and other right-wing blowhards and birdbrains - NR
*DISAGREE - sum of us r just lazy +/or don't c acronyms or abbreviationss as stupid or dum
As for the original question, I'm quite sure (minus any empirical evidence) that some players have no idea what gg means AND they don't care and/or wouldn't think about looking it up via a search engine - so they just ignore it. AND I'm also quite sure many(?) players never (or rarely) look in the chat window
True. Just a couple of letters, what harm could they be ?
They simply imply that you are too lazy to type two single-syllable words.
However good or bad, the English language clearly deserves better than that.
My experience with GG is unique. I lost the game to a Russian (stronger than me) player and messaged " Thanks for playing, a GG" and invited him for friendship. In return my invitation for friendship was refused and return came a message in Russian laungage. I did not understand the message and is still wondering what was that.
This is kind of off the thread, but where can I go to ask questions about chess etiquette? I want to discuss winning on time and whether its appropriate to promote pawns if you are ahead in material already...
Thanks!
I think it is wisest to let the loser initiate any post game comments. Anything you try to say when you won can be misconstrued. I have seen people get mad at "Thanks for the game". While I don't get offended at "gg", I can't help but feel that people that say, good game, when it clearly wasn't are kind of shallow. It reminds me of people that say "how are you" when they clearly don't want to hear how you are. I guess post game comments can be viewed as a type of social grooming, but I think it is important to be sincere in any thing you do say.

Start your own thread right here under General Chess Discussion and I'm sure there are also several (maybe dozens) of similiar threads already here. BTW as far as promoting pawns go there's no hard and fast rule here: It all depends on each position and whether you can mate faster with what you already have or not. Some players will promote every pawn they have if a stubborn opponent refuses to resign in a hopelessly lost position, but I prefer to get the game over with ASAP.

OK. I will probably do that. Just seemed like "piling on" to push the pawn, though it would probably be the safest and fastest for me, at my skill level. Thanks!
