GM Karpov

GM Kasparov

GM Korchnoi

GM Spassky

How come I've never heard of GM Fischer?

Fischer is a GM

He just wanted to be called Bobby instead.

But shoudn't use his title when recognizing him in tournaments and stuff? For example, while searching through some of the FIDE stuff they would call it GM Kasparov vs. GM Karpov, but never GM Fischer.

maybe they just assume we know that Fischer was a GM?

Could you possibly be a World Champion and not be a GM?

Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker . . . all were World Champions (officially or not) without the GM title -- which didn't exist until the early part of the 20th century.

Actually, within chess circles, you don't really hear "GM Kasparov," "GM Korchnoi," etc.

As WGM Pogonina says in this article:

As a fellow GM pointed out, “When you say GM Kasparov, you probably mean Sergey Kasparov from Belarus, otherwise it’s simply Kasparov.”

The title didnt officially exist until 1950---the middle of the 20th century.

How is it possible to have heard of Spassky but not Fischer ?

Avatar of inmaniac

At some point you probably transcend the need for the title.

Avatar of pt1992

Exactly inmaniac.  GM next to Fischer is absolutely unnecessary.

how many players skipped the IM title and went straight to Grandmaster ?

Christiansen, Tal, Kramnik are 3 that I can think of , there are surely more. At one point Kramnik was like 2650 FIDE but only an FM I believe !?

There are 22 of them at the moment:

please, don't feed the trolls.

Teamwillow: your comment is ridiculous. You couldn't beat Judit Polgar or Humpy if you played them repeatedly. Polgar has beaten Kasparov and other world champions.

And how many of them are truly GM's? 0. It's one thing to be given a GM title for chess ability, and it's another thing to be given the title due to chess affirmative action.

Basically, none of those women are strong players, and I (even though I'm only 1800) could defeat all of them. It's kinda like the WNBA. Someone may point out that the women are great FT shooters, maybe some even better than men. I will then kindly refute, since they use a smaller ball.

Teamwillow you say---" since they use smaller balls."

Thats what she said about you. She said your nick-name was B.B. balls  (Balls of tragically small stature; very tiny testicles).Cry

Teamwillow is correct to a degree that the wgm title requires less chess playing strength than the GM title. However, he's still a moron since he doesn't seem to know that the wgm title still indicates a fairly high degree of acheivement and is certainly not handed out for class level play.

I think teamwillow is having fun at our expense.
