Good chess books

What's a good chess book? I'm working on improving my game and I'm interested in buying some books. Any suggestions?

Rather than take a stab at answering your wide-ranging question, I will suggest that you specify what are areas you wish to improve.

Also, are there any authors you enjoy and find effective and others you cannot stand?
