Good Chess Software

I find using winboard an effective tool to use to go over games or openings for study. The problem is that if you go through a game and then alter a course for analysis the old line is lost. There must be some software out there that you can use to record not only games, but also variations as well. I'm looking for free downloads specifically but if it isn't to expensive I am willing to buy some. Any suggestions?

There are good chess programs out there but those are NOT for free. We have lots of chess programs here in chess.com downloads, but it still, maybe, it will not satisfy your needs.

No.1 chess program today is the Rybka and I think 2nd is Fritz 10.

Sigma Chess with the HIARCS engine is pretty rocking. I play it a lot and its a strong engine, potentially way beyond my level of play but on easier settings I can engage in some good chess. Good analysis, rating system, etc. Also good for testing out openings, analyzing positions, etc. The 3D graphics are a bit
crap though.

I am both simply and maby remotely cheap for free software your best bet is the free fritz download.  Go to this site www.freewebs.com/zzbrandon and click on the chess playing software link and it will take you to an old version of the fritz program.  As far as free for varations and or opening I would go with the free opening trainer.  As far as buying software the best I found for me that was cheap was chessmaster 10th edition, keeps chess interesting with a vareity of different levels and playing styles.  There's my two cents.

I did find some decent training software for about 50 bucks. The Personal Chess Trainner looks quite promising to me.
