"Good game"

About 1% of people say this back.

Yes, people move on to other games quickly and don't know if you are sincere or if you are being sarcastic.

I'll say good game, or if I wait more than ten seconds and they don't I just move on because I expect they already have moved on as well.

But a little friendly sportsmanship would be nice more than once in a very rare while.

I say "gg" or GL in your games" or "thxz 4 games" or "o7", few respond back, and the majority that do are often abusive. However, occasionally you meet players who not only give a respectful response, but are a real pleasure to talk to after the game. Truthfully, though, there's a lot of bad attitudes here, you can often be subject to verbal abuse after a game, having never uttered a word .

Maybe because it was not a good game. Consider that.

It's not about the quality of the game, it's about acknowledging your opponent, without whom there is no game at all. This is the same reason why competitors acknowledge their opponent's in sports ,or some other competition, with a salute, hand-shakes ,"gg", or some other gesture...it's not actually about whether the contest was good or not.

Some revealing stuff, eh?

Well, Congratulations to you for being a such wonderful competitor. I can see that you are clearly superior in your gamesmanship.

Just my opinion, but, had I voluntarily revealed assent to withholding courteous discourse on account of my disdain for an opponent after a game, I would not be surprised if someone acknowledged it as such, nor would I have a leg to stand on by making them out to be the one lacking in competitive graces.

Hypothetically, of course.

Unless perhaps I wore an angry face to the conversation, and then that would clearly establish me as the courteous and sportsmanlike one. happy.png

If I blundered badly, I will even say "good game, I got outplayed"

Earlier today I had someone say "nice luck" after they blundered.

I replied with: "You blundered, and I capitalized, try again if you want", but my rematch request was not accepted.

And before that game, I made a poor choice that messed up my pawn structure, and should have led to an arduous march to defeat, against a higher rated opponent. I was tempted to resign after move 14, but then on a move several after that, he blundered and I ended up winning. At one point after that, and before the game was quite over, I told him I almost resigned on move 14. I ended up winning, he asked for a rematch, and then I blundered that game away. I said "Good game", waited for a response that didn't come and then hit "New 10 minute game".

@Badger_song you sound like someone I would enjoy playing with, if I ever get my skill up to where it can hang with yours.

Christ, people suck.

I usually say 'oh crap' when I blunder, but I get over it after a few seconds and I'm happy to laugh at myself about it.

Are you telling Christ or me? He sees and knows all, so you don't need to tell Him.

Maybe they just had a bad day. We've all been there.

I always say good game (sometimes good game, well played if I lose) or something like that when my game finishes, and yeah, very few people say it back. But I enjoy the occasional people I get who actually do say it back.

In one of my last games, I was about to say good game when I saw that my opponent called me a cheater. He literally called me a cheater because of a move I played that wasn't even good.

Avatar of David_Mary

Wow @exceptionalfork, your last game was a thrill to watch. And your opponent @AAAAARON a good sport.

Avatar of CharbZero

I've seen one or two people just write, "thanks". Maybe their mothers/fathers/coaches/role models never taught them???
I think the "gg" should be offered from the winner, but either way is ok. It's rare, tho.

Can confirm, had people throw tantrums because they drew rather than got a one sided victory.

Someone once messaged me to call me 'weak and pathetic' because I had him backed into a corner with multiple queens while he was down to a lone king. Alas I blundered one in a foolish burst of aggression and only drew sad.png
