Not so caring to almost offer physical violence for something not of her creation.

Many parents are apathetic toward their children's endeavors, and for all we know her father thought she had attracted that man's behavior but then stopped short of hitting her after learning the situation. She's obviously sympathetic toward her father's feelings.

Regardless, he appears very much to be a caring father, one who has high standards regarding responsibility.

Quite a lot to infer from a single incident where his child was scared of physical violence from him.

A person can see all this w/out an account....I think.

This post is pathetic.  Why do you care so much?   Go analyze a game or something if you have that much free insight towards a 22 yr old closing their account cuz daddy saw something.

I'm sure she was 18+ and as kaynight said, every culture is different.

Not really Miha, Western culture really, we are pretty much the same. Perhaps the only noticeable difference between Spanish and English people (not UK or Eire) is that we Spaniards are more open, you really need to break the ice in England if you want to meet people. People from Wales, Scotland or Eire are usually more open to strangers. London is in a whole different league.

People in the USA are basically the same, but it also depends on their family background.

I wouldn't say there are different cultures, but there are certainly different families.

Here is what happened: her father saw some nasty pictures in some unknown website in a foreign language and thought: OMG my daughter is so dumb she's gotten into trouble and doesn't even know it, so he got angry because her daughter is not street wise and should know better. Then in the heat of the moment he didn't want to listen to reason, she got nervous and closed the account.

He didn't do his daughter any favour though, this is an excellent place to practise your English, and the kind of resources this site offers regarding Chess is unpararelled in the Spanish world. Plus, there's a ton of good people here who could have helped her smash the nasty guy that sent her the pictures.

Chances are she will open another account.

She never said she was scared. You inferred she was scared.

She said her father got mad, almost hit her, and demanded she close her account. That's a sign of caring. A sign of not caring is doing nothing.

Perhaps it is arguable that she is sympathetic instead of scared, but she says "and this time I'm even not sure I want [to disobey them]" which implies that there have been times she wanted to disobey, and this is not one of them. That leans toward a sympathetic voice, but take it as you will.

Finally, her father asks that she close the account. Whether it be a punishment or to avoid such an incident in the future, he is taking control or having his daughter take control of the situation as opposed to letting the community (chess.com) dictate what happens.

As Kayknight told me yesterday, respect is not something he expects on chess.com. If one feels that way and wants respect, a responsible person removes oneself from chess.com

Your rhetorical question is apathetic.

As for "that much free insight": your words, not mine.

Just as well I'm irresponsible then.

I should have said if someone wants absolute respect or wishes to avoid disrespect. I know you're not that strict, so I don't think you'd qualify as an irresponsible person.

Now, a disrespectful person. That's debatable. Laughing

Or a control complex. Demanding a 22 year old doesn't go on a chess website?

Anyway, enough psychoanalysis based on a couple of sentences.

Wait a minute : Why is a father snooping on what a 22 year old adult is doing, unless we are not being told something here.

"My father was around and saw it."

Snooping connotes eavesdropping or spying. I imagine the amount of attention required to notice naked flesh is low enough that beign in the computer's line of sight caught the father's attention, sans snooping.

Who mentioned naked flesh?

I think we've found the culprit.

First you infer she was scared, and then you infer psychological disturbance within the father....

And you were concerned about my inferences?

This thread is just dripping with assumptions. I hope Aetheldred is correct and she comes back. She allways helped with Spanish translation. I am suspect of the last paragraph in post 39.

I guess it could have been some other offensive picture. I'll give you the nod on that one.
