GothamChess E4 D4 Openings Courses

So I bought IM Levy Rossman's Gotham Chess D4 Dynamite and E4 NY style as a bundle. Expensive but 34 total video lessons for the 2 courses & the PGN is a lot! That's where I seem to fall flat. The PGN. I don't understand how these things are meant to be used, so I have the worst time following along. I'm sure it's me because I love Levy's stuff. It goes through the main line then as you probably know has these variations that jump up and down the text page to follow that variation to it's completion. I don't understand why it isn't in the order he speaks about it in the video. I'm sure there is a good reason. I've only been playing 6 months but steadily slowly improving over that time. It just feels very messy to me & I actually believe these were done very well. What am I missing? I have the video lesson on my laptop & the PGN on my phone & there is always a point where I can't find the variation line that Levy jumps to quickly. I usually find it but there's got to be a better way? Thanks.

Hey Loc,

If you don't have the same order don't be worried about it, just keep on with the same pattern and at some point you'll understand which one to move first according to the situation (to counter attack for instance, or to simply block ennemy's pieces). If you have any issues with PGN, feel free to contact me in pm.

Also, if I may, you have 50% ish puzzles ratio and you did too little of them to positively improve in game. I've seen you completed every lessons which is great. So my advise would be to do a lot more of puzzles and intensive exercices. Because if you follow Levy's videos (which I do as well) and you can't seem to improve it certainly means that you lack some tactical/strategy insights midgame and at the endgames.

Cheers!

Levy recommended 15 puzzles a day right or wrong so I know I do more than that and that may be the problem bc I go sorta quicker than I should. But even when I'm wrong it's actually not that big a deal to me bc I always do all themes so Idk what the puzzle is after I miss i just get the hint rethink it and i understand what i missed. So that's just as valuable to me as getting it right. Ya know how they say you learn more from losing than winning, if you analyze which I do, I kinda feel the same about the puzzles. I should slow down tho your right. So what's your advice you see how much I study and I dont play that many games. I get so much more out of study and i have no lack of study materials. Do you think I should play more games ? More puzzles? More mastery lessons?

I feel my openings are getting decent my defenses not so much. I really feel like d4 London type openings are my style vs e4. However I've sampled the french defense, kings indian, Dutch, and Idk that i want to commit to any of those just yet. I want to sample the Caro Kahn since levy bigs it up so much and the overwhelming Sicilian. Any advice on a couple black defense recommendations? Thanks for replying

I would download SCID vs PC and insert the pgn file or pgn text into that. Then you'd get the game. Scid vs Pc is also free and you can create a database with all of his shared pgns

I posted this a while ago and have gotten better at using the PGNs for study but thanks for the tip I'll check it out!
