Okay, this choice is easier than if I had asked who is the greatest chess player of all time. Any way I just wnat your opinion to whether I'm wrong or not about my choice of Gioachino Greco who went +78 -0 =0 which is a perfect record, he lived in the 17th century.
After checking Greco's games on www.chessgames.com I believe that his record is as bogus as they come. There isnt a single game there in which any opponent is even named ! All but 4 of his 78 wins are listed as being played in 1620 and 2 are listed as 1590 yet his profile says he was born in 1600..... LOL On top of this the profile states he went to London and Paris in 1621 to "test himself against the rest of Europe. Yet there isnt even 1 game from 1621 and only 1 after 1621 and it also against the infamous " NN " !!! You have to be really gullible to buy this HOGWASH !!
Even if Greco did not play these games (which I'm not saying he didn't), he was still smart enough to create these tactical combinations, obviously far too advanced for anyone in his day.
I think some of you fail to remember the question, I know Greco isn't even closest to being in the top 50. Greco compared to a "grandmaster" in those days is probably like comparing Kasparov with myself, which is saying quite a bit.
He realized the importance of central control and positional play, which players such as Staunton or Saint-Amant (2 centuries after him) didn't have a firm grip on.
