why to be a greeter and what  is greeter

kohai

What is a Greeter and what do they do?
When a new person registers on the site, they are given an option to play a greeter in echess.  A greeter is a member who volunteers to play new registrants in echess games.  The greeter will welcome the new member and help answer any questions about the site. If you decide to be a greeter, you may be randomly selected to play in the game.  Our system will automatically create the game and add it to your list of current echess games.

How do I become a greeter?
Becoming a greeter is easy.  First, your account must be at least 1 month old.  Second, simply visit your echess settings page and scroll down towards the bottom where you see "Chess.com Greeter", and click the 'Be a greeter' checkbox.  You may also specify how many games you are willing to play -- the more the better!

I became a greeter, and greet all those new registrants and I'm tired of playing with them, because most of my won games was only by time and not because I am more strong player than any one of them. Though all those games were unrated, still I want more challenging games than to win the games only by time.

I recently posted this on a different thread, but was along the same lines as this one.

Its more about introducing the newcomer to the site, showing them around, answering any questions they may have. If they like to play fast, then let them know about Live chess .. if they play slow, perhaps suggest in future games they play a longer time controlled game of 5+ days.

Give them the link to the site features  page, let them know how to join tournaments and set up new game chalenges themselves, which page to go to to change their homepage theme... make them feel welcome. This can be done by messages/memo's if they aren't chatting in the chat games box [or they close it]. It means you have done your best to inform them of whats available on this site. If they only make a few moves [or less] in their game, thats their perogative.. but as i said, being a greeter is more than just playing the greeter game with a newcomer.

greeters give some tips and what to tell to new members

I sent this note to Kohai:

Thank you, I appreciate that.  I tried to greet a newcomer before, said 'hello, welcome to chess.com hope you enjoy your stay here' but I think I scared them because they suddenly logged off when I invited them to a game.  And here I am, wanting to be greeted so I'll know where I went wrong.  I'll try to be a better greeter someday.

Gokukid, i'm sure there was nothing wrong with your being a greeter. Sometimes people just don't know what to say or how to reply except for saying "hi" in their reply. Some panic when they realise there is actually someone on the other end, playing chess with them. Please don't let it put you off being a greeter. Even if you help one newcomer out of ten, thats a bonus.
Gokukid
i shall start greeting newcomers.  thanks for the encouragement kohai.

Now I know where I've been going wrong.  It's like a mistake in a chess opening.  I greet them like this : ''hello, welcome to chess.com hope you enjoy your stay here'.  See the mistake?  It's the word HOPE.  They're not gonna 'hope' and 'enjoy', they're gonna LOVE chess.com!

Laughing You'll make a really good greeter

Why do some greetees (the people being greeted) think that greeters aren't people. That annoys me!

Maybe its because [using myself as an example here] ;

If i were offline when my newcomer made his/her first move, they will

1. Get an automated welcome in the chatbox, and therefore possibly think that their greeter [me] is also automated.

2. Not necessarily know how to tell if i am online or offline..

[this explains why when i then log in to make a move, i've got messages from my newcomer asking me to hurry up and move ... its because they don't know about the little green flashing icon that shows if i'm online or not, and automatically assume i am online].

3. Some newcomers may think that the questions they ask about this site will get an auto-response and don't always know that their greeter is a real person.

Some people aren't just new to chess, but some are new to the internet.
