Greeters who don't greet

I've been waiting for a response and checking out features to try to learn what is available on the site. I find that my greeter has a number of newbies waiting for his move. He hasn't played since August 2008. Why doesn't your system eliminate greeters who don't greet?

Here's his profile info.

Maybe I can be of help DrBobR.Chess com wants members. No members, no chess com. There have been forum topics about this and the conclusion is that  they ( ie. chess com ) will not delete any account -  even if it is absolutely not active - because the person creating the account may come back . ( only in cheating cases is an account deleted ). I had a game started recently with a boy from Malasya and the boy did not come to make a move  for a long time, a month or so. I got stuck with the game, as I do not claim victory on time. Last week the boy made a move . I hope he does come back.

Since greeter games are unrated, you can safely resign the game and start another with somebody else. You will lose no points in your rating.

Although I am not a greeter myself, I will be glad to play a game with you and show you around the site. Drop a note in my profile if you agree.

I'm not suggesting they delete anyone ... same reason as yours .. I'd just say before you assign a greeter see if they have played in the past week, if not choose another greeter. Maybe that's too complicated for the guest chooser program, I'm not sure how sophisticated it is. I may take you up on your offer for a game. Thanks.

They don't choose greeters Smile . It is a feature one can apply to in the Account's characteristics . Anyone can be a greeter .

Yes, but it would be relatively straightforward to stop someone being a greeter if they haven't logged in in (for instance) three months.

I understand that ... I'm talking about when they match a greeter to a new player ... that's when the computer should bypass a greeter who hasn't been active in the past seven days (or a reasonable number of days). Cool

Just when you think you've got the site sorted Wink. Its like bug-testing a game... my god thats tiresome.

Avatar of DrBobR

yeah but you just got bug tested by somebody who's been doing bug testing for decades. (retired computer programmer/systems analyst/quality control analyst) Wink just can't get away from it!

On the subject of bugs, have you noticed that, at the top of the Most Recent Posts, it sometimes shows 24 Hours ago instead of 0 seconds ago ?

is weird but does he have greeter matches on?

Avatar of neb-c

oh, if he does that is a mistake. Maybe they should have computer's greet(play chess) and a person answer's questions. That way if one person goes the computer still plays.

Better still, randomly assign computer players and human players as greeters. Encourage the new member to rate his/her greeter and see which of the two types is regarded as friendlier. Turing Test time!

My greeter was very punctual and polite :)

Lucky I guess...

VERY lucky, I should say. Otherwise he/she would have been assimilated.

When I tried to play a Greeting game, it said "There are no Greeters online at this time." I figure the program searches for greeters who are online at the moment you try to start a game. Maybe your greeter signed on for a few minutes, then logged off for a month.

What do you call a GREETER who doesn't greet?

"I can't seem to find a single English word which expresses the opposite of greeting, to descibe what we do when we say goodbye. Any ideas?"

A VALEDICTER perhaps?

As Bart Simpson once said, "ah, the ol' greet and toss"

So perhaps if you're not a greeter, you're a tosser.
