I also think Babaschess and Arena are the best free GUIs. As for engine just download them and try them.

Chessbase reader 2013 is a very good GUI. Just add free engine Houdini 1.5 . Stockfish 3 and Critter 1.6. I think you can find free database on the net too. http://www.chessbase.com/Download/download

I really like using Fritz 13's GUI and Critter 1.6a.  I don't have Deep Fritz,  so my Fritz engine only uses 1 core.  Critter 1.6a and Houdini 1.5 both work in Fritz's gui,  and I am able to use both cores on my Core2Duo with both engines.
