Guitar !!!!
guitar ans drums
depends what you like. If you find you whislte a lot, melody and harmony are probably your bag. go with the guitar. if you find you are constantly fidgitting and tapping your fingers, you probably would enjoy the physical and rhythmic properties of the drum kit. either is a noble instrument in the right hands. check out max roach and/or lenny breau. killing.
let me know which you decide on.
Everybody plays guitar (or so they'd have you think -- they actually just own guitars and strum on them until they can get by -- that's not playing the guitar). Go with drums. I'm a songwriter who lives for harmony and melody, but I'll take a drum set over a guitar any day.
The old saying goes Guitar players are a dime a dozen. A solid drummer will always have a gig.
Says the 20+ year guitar veteran.
I've been a guitarist for 20+ years as well and I've never regretted it. Guitar offers so many possibilities - acoustic, lead, rhythm, classical etc. My hobby (other than chess) is building guitars and effects pedals - excellent fun. I've just started learning the drums with my son and find it excellent fun because it's a bit more physical - you have to use all 4 limbs and co-ordinate them all. Different strokes for different folks, but what's to stop you learning both? Learning drums is good for guitar playing (because you learn the importance of rhythm and keeping a beat) and learning guitar is good for playing drums (because you get an understanding of what the other players are doing in the band), so you can't go wrong. Just give it all you've got and get as good as you can.
What do you call someone who hangs out with musicians?
(drum-roll-crash cymbal)
A DRUMMER!
HA HA HA HA
The joke in my band is that I'm not a musician, I'm just a drummer. Now I recognize that percussionists are true musicians, and it is out of respect to all the percussionists out there that I say, "I'm just a drummer."
I've hung out with enuf musicians to know how they hear a song, which is different from the way I hear it. For example, I don't care what key it's in. I couldn't tell you what key any song we do is in. There are musicians who play drums that could tell you, but I can't.
I've found the hardest position to fill in a band is the bass player. Most bands inevitably use one of the "dime-a-dozen" guitar players who agrees to play bass, but rare are those few who actually DESIRE to play the bass. They learn the bass guitar, not as a guitar, but as a bass - all the things that make it a different instrument from the guitar. A really good bass player will always have his choice of gigs.
I pick on the drummer in my band all the time. I'll say something about us being "4 musicians & a drummer." He's extremely good natured & laughs right along with it. He knows I'm not serious...I've been playing music with this guy for at least 15 years, and I have nothing but respect for his musical ability.
I'm not coordinated enough to play drums!
