Yeah, so I was playing a family member last night and we were using a collectible 2020 election chess set. Both me and my opponent made a few mistakes because all of the pieces were in the image of political leaders, and we weren't familiar with the set. This was the outcome (me as White):

No offense or anything, but HOW EXACTLY DO YOU GET CHECKMATED SMACK IN THE CENTER OF THE BOARD BY JUST TWO PIECES, WITH NONE OF YOUR OWN PIECES ANYWHERE NEAR YOU? This cracked us up. Soon, I'm due for a rematch!

If you think the King on c7 is 'SMACK' in the centre of the board, you need some glasses. happy.png

What I meant by that was, the king has access to all eight potential escape squares-it's not on the edge of the board.

It's actually three pieces, because the rook on b1 is protecting the queen, otherwise Kxb8.

Besides, Q+N is a very effective team.

Yeah that's a nice trick. It's about controlling those 8 squares around the king. A LSB works too.

So let me challenge you a bit, since we are discussing the topic of a runaway king.

Can you find a forced mate in 5 for white in the following position (white to move):

This makes use of a high concept I like to call the 'ghost square'.
