Jon Ludvig Hammer has been well known as a second but not recognised as a top player, but he really is quite strong. A bit unnoticed he today passed Wei Yi, Leko, Naiditsch and Nepomniachtchi (not exactly a weak quartet) on the live rating list, after winning an impressive game with black against Krasenkow. Another win or two and he could pass also Ivanchuk and Ponomariov. With 2706.4 he would be the highest rated player ever from Scandinavia, if not for that other Norwegian.

Hammer's 31st is nice:

Here's a blog post I wrote about him a few days ago when he broke 2700 on the live list:

That was a pretty win to pass 2700 with, I hadn't even noticed that he was that high before I suddenly noticed it today.

The idea behind the winning 31. .. Ra2 today was that if white continues as in the game and then would have gone for 33. Rba3 everything would be fine if black didn't have Bh4 and suddenly Bd5 next is mate:

On Twitter Hammer said that he feels today's game might be his best ever.

It sure looks like it! #HammerForChampion ?

He's a hella talented player, but I don't know if he'll ever make it into the truly top elite.

I like his style and I like his games, but unless there is a sea change he just doesn't have the absolute killer instinct of those guys.

It doesn't feel as if he "should" be knocking on a top 30 spot ahead of players like Ivanchuk and Pono, but looking at his results in 2015 he sure didn't lose against many weakies. +23-6=23 with the losses coming against Anand, Nakamura, Topalov, Grischuk, Wojtaszek and Ivanchuk.

Wasn't it his game against Blomqvist that took him across the border to the land of 2700?
He is indeed a very strong player. In the last two years he has improved from about no 100 on the world ranking to now being in the top 40 live.

Hammer's video on Krasenkow -- Hammer, 2016 offers a great deal of instruction concerning piece mobility, the bishop pair, pawn sacrifices, and rook endings.
