Hammer vs Carlsen

Why did Hammer play h4 and bh3. what was he expecting, a blunder? what does that even do for his position? and then he passively retreats his bishop to f1. what a great diagonal to move around on!

pdve

one of the things about carlsen is that he tends to end up with active pieces in the endgame this is despite the fact that he sometimes has to defend in the middlegame. sometimes when you look at the endgame position, it is actually amazing how passive the opponent is. this happened in carlsen-radjabov as well. and radjabov is praised to no end by thousands of IMs.

returning to hammer-carlsen, what amazed me is why he avoided playing e3. doesn't that give him a good pawn stucture while making his bishop good. besides his heavy pieces are not tied down to the defence of pawns.

i am sure that anand vs carlsen will be better than these games. anand is definitely no lightweight and i am sure there will be at least a fight.

What if Hammer's moves are too complex for you too grasp? After all he's still 1000 points higher than you...

pdve

is it too complex to see e3? what is the point behind h4. it's one thing to respect accomplishment. it's quite another to be mystified by personalities.

pdve

and also, i need to mention, everyone makes mistakes.

Chess4001

You can't accurately identify one unless you can exploit it, and it wouldn't be easy to do it unless you were Carlsen level

pdve

chess4001, it seems like i am talking about moves and you are talking about ratings so the conversation is at cross-purposes. can you figure out the point behind h4 and what the bishop expects to do at h3?

pdve

and why wasn't e3 played?

pdve

estragon, it seems like you're talking about e3 when it doesn't make sense anymore. i meant much earlier. at move 16 to be precise. or at move 18 again insted of defending with the rook. seems like doubling on the d-file was pointless since it is not up to white to open the d-file. again, i don't know why a 2600 was making such moves. and this is right out of the opening when no serious problems have started so white is actually opting for a passive setup. then suddenly he switches gears and starts to go attacking with bh3 which is easily defensible and only makes black's king more active. the major pieces are just waiting to be exchanged so it's not as if black's king is going to be a liability in the center.
