one of the things about carlsen is that he tends to end up with active pieces in the endgame this is despite the fact that he sometimes has to defend in the middlegame. sometimes when you look at the endgame position, it is actually amazing how passive the opponent is. this happened in carlsen-radjabov as well. and radjabov is praised to no end by thousands of IMs.
returning to hammer-carlsen, what amazed me is why he avoided playing e3. doesn't that give him a good pawn stucture while making his bishop good. besides his heavy pieces are not tied down to the defence of pawns.
Why did Hammer play h4 and bh3. what was he expecting, a blunder? what does that even do for his position? and then he passively retreats his bishop to f1. what a great diagonal to move around on!
