Only an idiot can deliver a king move checkmate..

King generally goes out of way with the enemy king and gives a discovered checkmate.

Good question! And there you go. A well known instance of a king move delivering checkmate, and I don't think many of us here would consider Lasker an idiot. Personally when I first saw this I thought delivering mate with 0-0-0 (queenside castling) was more elegant and aesthetically pleasing, but who am I to be quibbling with Lasker? Nice queen sacrifice as well. Enjoy, Ubzugabir.

Thanks Karpark!

That's such a great game. You really have to have some faith in your ability to see the line to drop a queen in that way.

Metal Guru, ain't that true?

By the way, in his memoirs Lasker noted that when he was asked why he had finished his game with Thomas with 18 Kd2# instead of 18 O-O-O#, he would say that he was aware of a Morphy game that had finished with castling long delivering checkmate, and deliberately chose Kd2 instead.

Avatar of Karpark

Ha ha! He probably thought Morphy was a flash git as we say in NW5.

And don't forget that well known 9 move Classic !!!

You see how really dangerous the Bongcloud Attack can be, AussieRookie?

Classic!!!

The way the White King weaved a path in there was just breathtaking!

And I thought the bishop manouevre Be2 and then Bh5 instead of the superficially simpler Qh5 demonstrated real tactical sophistication.

I'd hate to fall for this.. hate..hate...hate.  (that is my OTB fear).  I think I would have thought there was something up by move 3 with Ke3. I probably would have played 4...d6 to get my queen out.

I wonder if Qh5 would have been to obvious.

Black would have been petrified with the Q and K lined up that he would have created an escape square.
