The punishment for abusing vacation should be to have to listen to the Go Gos song Vacation.
NO!!
Anything but that! I promise never to do it again!!!!!
Sometimes in peoples lifes peple go on vacation and are not on the internet, they are just doing something else. Then the chess.com vacation time good. Everyone can understand that? Ok.
But unfortunately there are people here that abuse the chess.com vacation time. What to do? I don't know.
So why doesn't it happen to me?
Perhaps the staff hates me, and someone personally sees to it that, out of all the chess.com members, my clock alone does not reset.
That must be it. Yes, obviously you are right, everyone's clock resets but mine.
I too had an oppenent who went in and out of vacation. And I am pretty sure that his time went up. I checked: only 12hrs left... later: vacation.. back: 2 days left...
LOCKED. Thus we have to always wait for the LAST bracket to finish.
Ok... The bracket won't lock until EVERY game in EVERY bracket is finished... So if there's ONE game left but the winner has played every game & has WON them ALL in a "6(2)->1"... WELL, this is an example of time waisting for this bracket...
I say set it up so when the WINNER or (WINNERS if, "5(1)->2") are mathematically LOCKED, let the TRNY move on...
Ive been thinking about this too. Seems like a good idea to me:
- The round ends if the remaining games cannot change who continues to the next round.
- The remaining games can be finished by the players normally, the others just dont have to wait for it.
Does Chess.com compile statistics, publish details, or even take action against those who abuse the "On vacation" option ? Perhaps not, because they are paying members ??
Does Chess.com even care to honestly reply ?
What a bunch of whining. Just schedule another game and get on with things. So a game that would otherwise take 3 or 4 months now takes 6 months, or a tournament that woud take two years takes three. Who cares? This issue should be somewhere around 187th on your list of priorities.
No one is whining. I don't like getting a game started or midway and then someone takes off for weeks, and it is a simple fix to provide the option to not play with someone who wants vacation time. Plus, I haven't played any game that has gone longer than a month and the only reason that was that long is...guess, they went on vacation.
All of your recent games are 48hours/move, which is 2 days per move. Assume you move instantly every single time. That still means that for each numbered move you both make, it is entirely reasonable to assume that up to 2 days passed. Thus, either all your games end in less than 15 moves, or you happen to be paired with people who move way faster than it is at all reasonable to expect. Thus, when you join your next game, it would not be unreasonable if it lasted almost 3 months- even with you moving literally instantly every single time- and your opponent did not use a single Vacation time.
Congratulations. In a system without Vacation time, even with a relatively short time/move game, you are now committed to never being away for as much as a single weekend for 3 months or more, and the time period gets significantly longer when we remove the assumption that you always move literally instantly.
MathBandit Mr_Spocky rooperi varelse1 Ubik42 & to all the rest of the ppl that contributed to this thread. imo of a "free member." I would CHANGE.....ONE small thing for TRNY'S & that is...
And I DON'T think that I will find anyone who reads this to disagree w/me...
We'll saaayy, that when a bracket is highlighted it means that is is DONE and is LOCKED. Thus we have to always wait for the LAST bracket to finish.

P.S. Of course the rest of the games can continue... Even if the last game is w/the WINNER who's unbeaten... He could still play the next RD & not feel the pressure to ask for a DRAW or RESIGN, to SPEED things up...
plz (Chess.com staff) &/orKohai Could you bring this up in your next "Open Topic" for new ideas (forum/meeting).
Aside from the caps, I have no problem with this. Of course, it may not be all that easy to code in. Look for future threads of "Hey I was dropped from the tourney but I wasn't mathematically eliminated yet!"
It'll never happen, especially in the longer tournaments. If members quit the site, or are banned during the tournament, the next two players in line move on.
What I don't understand is why sites (not just chess.com) give 20, 30, 60+ days of vacation. I've never not played chess for 30 days... and I've never not gotten online for 30 days. Do people need breaks or are without internet? Sure. But months? I don't understand.
I can see that... so maybe a maximum of 20 days? Ok make it 30 even... to be taken only in blocks of 5 days at a time. It seems like a small convenience meant for those rare occasions has completely colored the game.
But there may be other uses for vacations I didn't think of, I'm honestly wondering why so many days are given.

On the contrary, it's a feature that is used correctly by the vast majority of users, but that the vocal minority thinks is a huge problem. This is something that happens very commonly on forums such as these; very few people decide to venture forth into the forums to say how wonderful they think Vacation is.
Haha ok, so it's not as easy to figure out as I thought I guess there will always be drawbacks. Maybe that's why (IMO at least) it's overly generous, so that it accommodates nearly every situation. And the solution to abuse is you can choose to avoid games / tourneys that allow vacation.
Ok, at least that makes enough sense for me to stop questioning it.
I had a situation a few years ago where my place was out of power for three weeks. That was annoying because it was below zero too.
The nice thing was that the cable bill was only 89 cents that month.

What is the maximum amount of days though? Back when I had a premium account I remember thinking it was a ridiculous amount. Is it 60? 90? I woudn't have thought of such a limit myself... but as I said in my previous post it makes enough sense I suppose. And I agree with you it's largely used correctly.
