There have been ways to backdoor into a title for some time now. This particular method might be new. Why do you ask?
I think its a farce. If getting the GM title is that easy, maybe ALL the 2400 IMs should move to Africa and just beat a couple of weak GMs from Egypt. Really, what's going on with Fide? It's turning into a joke!

You will find many good players in Egypt, and noone of them is imported. What is a real farce is the US line of GM's- about 90% of them are imported goods.

I think you should be angry. You're an IM too. How can an IM who is only 2399 be declared a GM? There are maybe thousands of IMs who are just as good or even better than that South African dude.
By winning a tournament that FIDE has designated as bestowing the GM title.

If you don't like the FIDE title rules, then I suggest establishing your own ones.

Here in America chess is all about openings and tactics. I have a friend who is rated 1600 and doesn't even know what a Marco Hop is (it should be noted that Andrew Soltis, who uses the term Marco Hop in Pawn Structure Chess, is American)! Not only that but doesn't even know when a Nd5 is strong or premature in a Marcozy Bind structure, and I defeated him after he played the 5.f3 Sicilian because he insisted on building up a bind. He also doesn't know what Bahr's Rule is.

That's why I am confused. If I ain't mistaken, you only get GM norms from scoring a certain percentage against other GMs. And I don't mean one GM alone.....

I think he was Benoni Jump's cousin.
I think Josh Waitzkin should be pissed. He quit prematurely when he could become GM by just going to Africa and play in their tournaments. Danny Rensch should make GM too, no question about that LOL.....
I assume you've already applied for South African citizenship then?
As far as I know, South Africa uses a different rating system. His rating would be equivalent to about 2500 +

The REAL answer, as those who are enlightened enough to know, is unfortunately not permitted to be posted on this extremely "politically correct" site. I am just pointing out the obvious ;)) Anyway, anyone desperate enough for the GM title (and shouldnt there be many here) can go ahead....
Don't be shy.

Do you think defeating grandmasters--even "weak" ones--in a tournament is easy?
Anyone who can compete with a horde of grandmasters and somehow manage to come out on top is most deserving of the GM title!
I just noticed that a certain low rated IM in South Africa was awarded the GM title after he beat a GM (just one GM) in an African tournament. His rating is really low for a GM - 2399.
