Have I forgotten how to play??

Lately it seems like my chess is so inconsistent.  Sometimes I play solid and other times I just play aweful.  I'm not seeing the board well and tactically I just seem to get lost in a idea instead of making sure it is sound.

Of course I have mainly been playing 1-0 min. games and I suppose this doesn't help matters.

Here is a recent game I'm actually proud of my attack and execution.  Time was 1 min. with 1 second increments.  I don't know if anyone else goes through these times in chess, but it sure is frustrating to feel like your taking steps backwards.

Maybe you need a break from chess, no? That's what I'm about to do once all of my games are done. For me, I'm going to do my AP summer work that I have been putting off. LOL

Yes perhaps you are correct.  Maybe it is like how swimmers take breaks to break through their plateaus?

What did you think of the attack?

15. Ng6 seems interesting. =)

I did warn you about those one minute games! :) Not even actually good for improving your one minute games if you ask me!

Since I started playing exclusively turn-based a few months ago, there's been no dips for me, only steady improvement. I was falling a bit into the trap of playing my turn-based games a bit like blitz games before that..

As for the attack, I shouldn't probably comment on stuff like that if I haven't analyzed it. I usually make some sort of howler.. For a one minute game it looked very effective though..

P.s. I still don't understand why you are playing e4 and f4 against everything as if you think you'll somehow be getting into similar positions..

immortalgamer

Yes you did.  And you were right.  I feel like I've been blinded on the board and it has to be because of 1 min. games.

I don't play e4 f4 against everything.  Just happend to that time.  :)

MathChampion

Maybe you should think more ahead, and try one of those chess mentor things

Yeah, the attack was well executed. It's something that I can't do in a one minute game. : D I usually just get lucky when my opponent blunders.

I appriciate that scarjo.  I guess as a player I felt like I had gotten to a point where I was seeing things tactically that many others players did not consider...and all of a sudden that skill seems to be gone.  Creatively speaking, I'm not considering the impossible during a game lately, but rather just playing like an average chess player.  This game is of course just a 1 min, and not a great example, but at least it was a little out of the box.  I think the best move in the game was Rf1 followed by Rg6!

stonesikich

you did an outstanding attack and for you to think of a sacrifice like that in a 1 minute game thats brilliant. I didn't really see a major blunder look like you had it throught your head.

immortalgamer

That is very kind of you to say.  I suppose if you looked at some of my other posted games then you would think this was quite tame.

Yes I agree linwood.  However when you feel like you are regressing rather than developing then it is frustrating.

Here is a game from 5 months ago...I feel like I would not see this today.

Perhaps also you're playing better players? I remember Frank Marshall said something like he was just as good at tactics as Lasker, but whenever he played Lasker he couldn't get into the open positions he loved.. Smile

Also it is possible to get worse if you're not keeping your mind sharp by doing lots of tactics puzzles. How many of them per day do you do?

My observation is this, you play quite a few 1 minute games. That is just moving the pieces in my opinion. I have done it, and it IS fun, but that is just it... FUN! I understand you are in for the enjoyment of chess, and that is what might keep you coming back. However, perhaps you should try playing 5 minute games. I used to play a lot of blitz, and 5 minutes seemed to be enough time to not only think, but to plan. Then to add to that, i think that when you come online to play that you have to remind yourself that it ISNT BLITZ/BULLET. That you must calm down, your not running a race, this is a marathon, pace yourself, think before you move. Ask yourself why you are making that move. But above all else dont quit having fun with chess. If blitz is what you wake up wanting to do, BY ALL MEANS play blitz. But when you feel like playing on here, tone it down, think of a brilliant attack/ or a novel idea to play. make if fun. Oh and by the way, if you truly look at the context of the game, ALTHOUGH i dont know your opponents rating, i do know that he was making random moves, as were you. You didnt think you didnt prep for an attack, you merely memorized the basic mates, making it easier to do.

you won didn't you

are you saying that was a one min game theb if it was its one of the better ones i have been thru.I have played what i would thik are compareable games at 4 min or 5 min even a few good 3 min games. Now if your like me a old 49 year old fart i play only for fun now an fun to me is 5 min or under chess. The only time i play with out a clock is when the newcomers ask for a game at mac donalds even then i find myself reaching for the clock an have to stop myself.By the way i think it must be a positonal pawn push attack you play a lot  as you let him take your bishop on the back rank an he jumps it as he thinks now you have to castle by hand.

Yes this is probably true.  I do tactics puzzles everyday and also chess mentor lesson when I can.
