There was one serial killer called the chessboard killer who tried to kill 64 people (because of the number of squares on the board). I think he killed like 48 people before he got arrested

And he didn't murder his mom, he killed his roommate in the halfway house where he was living after already suffering a breakdown. He was found incapable to stand trial and has been confined to a mental institution for the last 60 years
